Job Description

We’re partnering with a growing SME near Cannock to recruit a newly created Assistant Accountant position. This role offers the opportunity to gain exposure to a broad and varied workload within a supportive and collaborative environment.

This role would suit someone who enjoys working in a small business, likes being hands-on with the numbers, and is looking to develop their wider finance knowledge. You’ll be given the time and support to get to know the business, its processes, and people, allowing you to gradually take on more responsibility as your confidence grows.

The company has a collaborative and down-to-earth culture, where finance is seen as a key part of the business rather than a back-office function. You’ll work closely with senior stakeholders, gaining exposure to decision-making and having the opportunity to make a genuine impact as the business continues to grow.

Key Responsibilities

* Production of monthly management accounts with clear commentary
* Ownership of budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis
* Monitoring profitability across projects and revenue streams
* Managing cashflow forecasting and ensuring strong financial visibility
* Overseeing credit control, supplier payments, and banking activities
* Responsibility for the full accounts cycle including AP, AR, and bookkeeping
* Preparation of VAT returns and liaison with external accountants
* Oversight of payroll in collaboration with an external provider
* Developing and improving financial processes, systems, and controls
* Supporting senior leadership with financial insight and decision-making

Role Requirements

* AAT qualified or studying/qualified (ACCA/CIMA/ACA) or qualified by experience
* Proven experience managing an end-to-end finance function
* Strong systems experience and advanced Excel skills
* Confident communicator, able to present financial information to non-finance stakeholders
* Proactive, organised, and comfortable working in a standalone role
* Strong attention to detail with a continuous improvement mindset
