An exciting opportunity has arisen at Leeds Public Health. Leeds Public Health plays a major part in delivering the city’s vision of a healthy, inclusive city. This role is part of the Healthy Living and Public Mental Health Team.
About You
* An undergraduate degree
* A Masters in Public Health / Masters in Health Promotion
* Considerable experience at PO6 level or equivalent
* Highly effective leadership, providing strategic direction, public health advocacy and influencing / development of policy
* Ability to analyse, synthesise and present evidence
* Strong commitment to addressing health inequalities
About the Role
As the Head of Public Health, you will join a dynamic public health team and play a pivotal role in delivering the city’s ambitions.
The role is a job share opportunity within the Healthy Living and Public Mental Health Team. You will lead strategy and oversee the delivery of healthy weight, healthy places and health promotion programmes.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide high‑level strategic advice across the whole system, with a focus on Healthy Living, Healthy Places and Healthy Weight.
* Lead efforts to support communities in maintaining healthy weight, including HFSS advertising reduction, managing hot food takeaways impact and increasing access to healthy food.
* Collaborate closely with Spatial Planning to embed health into the built environment, ensuring robust health impact assessments for large developments.
* Influence and collaborate with anchor organisations and partners to develop a strategic approach to healthy weight.
* Provide strategic leadership around the health and wellbeing mission of the Leeds Food Strategy.
* Lead a team of public health staff, providing line management and developing their capability.
* Coordinate the development, commissioning and delivery of public health programmes, policies and services, ensuring they are evidence‑based, equitable and cost‑effective.
* Lead surveillance and assessment of health and wellbeing, using epidemiological techniques and health equity auditing.
* Analyse and interpret data to inform policy, strategic planning and publications.
* Advise senior managers, commissioners and the public on public health matters, presenting complex information in clear formats.
* Manage budgets and financial proposals for commissioned services, ensuring value for money.
* Represent Leeds City Council in meetings and events, and co‑ordinate public health research initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience
* Undergraduate Degree.
* Masters in Public Health or Health Promotion.
* Substantial senior leadership and management experience in public health or equivalent field.
* Experience leading public health programmes, teams and projects.
* Experience in budgeting, finance management and commissioning of services.
* Knowledge of project and programme management, partnership working and health inequalities.
* Strong IT skills – Microsoft, internet and e‑mail.
* Evidence of public health ethics and ability to promote continuous improvement.
Desirable
* Experience in innovation and change within public health.
* Experience in multi‑agency strategic working at national level.
* Experience in writing and presenting public health evidence to national audiences.
