About us
As part of His Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS), the Tribunals directorate is responsible for the effective administration of Tribunals in England and Wales, and non-devolved Tribunals in Scotland and Northern Ireland. We collaborate with an independent judiciary across various jurisdictions to ensure a fair, efficient, and effective justice system.
HMCTS is undertaking an ambitious reform programme aimed at enhancing the provision of a world-class justice system, improving user experience, and reducing costs. This includes modernising court estate and technology, streamlining practices, and refurbishing buildings to better serve vulnerable witnesses and victims.
Your role
Based within a Courts & Tribunals Service Centre (CTSC) or Regional Hearing Centre (RHC), you will support tribunal case management by undertaking complex case work and assessments to facilitate case progression and remove barriers to timely justice.
Working both independently and as part of a team, under supervision, you will make case management decisions within delegated judicial powers, liaising with stakeholders and HMCTS colleagues to administer justice effectively.
Key responsibilities
* Perform initial assessments of tribunal cases, applications, and correspondence to determine authority and the best route for case progression.
* Manage caseloads proactively, identifying barriers or risks, and developing interventions to resolve issues.
* Provide expertise across tribunals, potentially across jurisdictions.
Development opportunities
HMCTS values learning and development. Legal Officers can apply for the HMCTS legal apprenticeship scheme, which offers training to become fully qualified solicitors, with career progression into roles such as legal adviser or legal team manager within tribunals. The scheme lasts 3-6 years, depending on previous qualifications.
Customer service standards
* Promote user-focused activity, maintaining high standards of written and interpersonal communication.
* Contribute to Standard Operating Controls (SOC) and Service Assurance Framework (SAF).
* Lead on maintaining service standards and continuous improvement initiatives.
* Manage complaints and service failures effectively.
Experience and qualifications
* A law degree or equivalent technical experience is desirable.
* Equivalent technical experience involves decision-making within a set framework, guided by precedents, under supervision.
Operational delivery
This role is part of the Legal Operational Delivery Profession, providing essential services to the public across various roles, including court ushers, call centre advisers, and processing staff at courts and tribunals. Being part of this profession offers access to standards, skills development, and career growth opportunities.
