Little Maplestead
GSL Education - Chelmsford
Higher level teaching assistant
Posted: 9 March
Offer description

A highly supportive mainstream primary school is seeking an experienced and confident Higher Level Teaching Assistant to work within its dedicated SEN provision, specialising in supporting children with autism.

This provision is a specialist unit based within the main school building, offering a structured, nurturing environment for pupils with additional needs while maintaining inclusion within the wider school community.

This is a full-time, long-term opportunity for someone with extensive SEN experience who is ready to take the next step in their career.

About the Role

As a HLTA within the SEN provision, you will play a key role in supporting pupils with autism, delivering structured interventions, and leading small group learning sessions. You will work closely with the SENCO, teachers, therapists, and support staff to ensure pupils receive consistent, high-quality support tailored to their individual needs.

While a HLTA qualification is not essential, substantial experience working with children with SEN — particularly autism — is absolutely paramount.

Key Responsibilities

Supporting pupils with autism within a specialist SEN provision

Leading small group sessions and structured learning activities

Delivering targeted interventions to support communication, social interaction, and emotional regulation

Assisting with adapting and differentiating learning materials

Promoting positive behaviour strategies and supporting sensory needs

Encouraging independence, confidence, and engagement

Supporting transitions between the provision and mainstream classroom where appropriate

Working collaboratively with the SENCO and wider multidisciplinary team

The Ideal Candidate

Extensive experience working with children with SEN, specifically autism

Confident leading sessions and supporting learning independently

Strong understanding of behaviour management and regulation strategies

Calm, patient, and consistent approach

Excellent communication and teamwork skills

Ability to build strong, trusting relationships with pupils

Proactive, adaptable, and resilient

No formal HLTA qualification is required – experience and specialist SEN knowledge are the priority.

Why Apply?

Join a well-resourced SEN provision within a mainstream primary school

Be part of a skilled and collaborative SEN team

Make a meaningful impact on pupils’ progress and wellbeing

Long-term stability in a full-time role

Opportunity to utilise and further develop specialist autism support expertise

If you are a highly experienced SEN professional ready to take on a rewarding and impactful role, we would love to hear from you.
