Job Description

The Environment Agency are fully committed to inclusivity and equal opportunities, offering flexible work arrangements for all our vacancies. Join us in a diverse environment where every voice is heard and valued. Do you want to effectively regulate the energy sectors to create a better place? The UK’s strategy to deliver Net Zero is driving a transformation in the energy sectors as they’re responsible for 24% of UK Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. They’ll need to fully decarbonise by 2050 whilst doubling electricity production. Concerns about energy security provide additional pressures to quickly transition to new sustainable sources of power, whilst maximising domestic sources of energy. Through effective regulation, we must ensure that energy sectors protect people and the environment from emissions, as well as mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change.

We’re recruiting a fixed‑term role, up to 2 years, for somebody with experience of working in or regulating energy sectors – this includes various scales of combustion plant, waste incineration and refineries.

Key responsibilities:

* Provide expert support and technical leadership through advice, guidance, and training
* Develop strategy for our sectors and produce the tools to regulate, support development and deliver environmental outcomes
* Commission and manage external research projects where needed
* Work with internal and external stakeholders such as Defra, DESNZ, internal operations teams, trade associations and other key industry players
* Respond to incidents and make yourself available for incident or business continuity support

Team:

The Energy & COMAH team is part of the Energy and Manufacturing Industries Regulation of Environment & Business (E&B) Directorate. Our technical experts lead on the definition of standards for our sectors, providing strategic direction, tools to support regulation, guidance and training, and environmental best practice.

Experience / skills required

* Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues in their work
* Relevant technical and regulatory knowledge, and experience of the work area for the role, gained either by working within and/or regulating relevant processes. This includes knowledge of control measures for emissions to air where relevant
* Ability to build and maintain good relationships with colleagues, operators, partner regulators, government, trade bodies and academia
* Work cooperatively as part of a team to achieve common goals

Contact and additional information:

Applications will be “blind” assessed using your answers to the competency questions. If you have any questions relating to this role, please contact Emma Preston or Charlotte Sholl at combustion@environment-agency.gov.uk. This vacancy closes at the end of October. Interviews are expected to be held in person in Birmingham by the end of November. Some travel may be required. If you consent to be recruited onto a reserve list, we’ll hold your details for six months and may offer you an alternative post.

Length of contract: Up to 2 years.

Competence 1 – Legislative Knowledge

Description: Applies knowledge of statutory environmental and technical requirements to protect both the Environment Agency and the environment.

As a senior advisor for the energy sectors, you will give advice on different regulatory requirements applying to combustion plants of different sizes and purposes. From your professional experience, please tell us about two differing combustion installations – how did their environmental impacts and regulatory requirements differ?

Competence 2 – Works in Teams

Description: Works co-operatively as part of a team to achieve common goals.

As a combustion senior advisor you will work with other senior advisors covering a wide portfolio of work both reactive and planned. Please tell us about a time you have worked as part of a team to deliver a portfolio of work and how you agreed everyone's priorities and responsibilities and flexed to help each other deliver those priorities.

Competence 3 – Builds and Sustains Relationships

Description: Develops and maintains effective working relationships.

As a senior advisor you will work with a range of external and internal stakeholders, including government officials, trade associations and the EA’s operational teams. Please give us an example from your own experience of where you have worked with different types of stakeholder and how you varied your approach to reflect this.

We are fully committed to having a diverse and inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share, so please include clearly any information regarding your preferred working arrangements on your application.

Artificial intelligence can be a useful tool to support your application, however, all examples and statements provided must be truthful, factually accurate and taken directly from your own experience. Where plagiarism has been identified (presenting the ideas and experiences of others, or generated by artificial intelligence, as your own) applications may be withdrawn and internal candidates may be subject to disciplinary action. Although the Environment Agency is a non‑departmental public body sponsored by Defra, we subscribe to and align with the candidate guidance on the use of artificial intelligence found on the Civil Service Careers website. Please review for more information on appropriate and inappropriate use.
