Overview
Selby is a vibrant market town in North Yorkshire, known for its rich history, scenic countryside, and strong community spirit. The area includes a mix of rural and urban environments, offering a diverse range of highway maintenance challenges—from managing busy town centre routes to maintaining quieter country lanes. The Highways Operations Unit is responsible for the implementation of highway improvement and maintenance schemes, routine highway maintenance activities, delivery of the winter maintenance services, local network management and liaison with the public at a local level. The role is part of Area 7, working with a dedicated team to deliver high-quality services, improve road safety, and ensure the network remains resilient and efficient for all users. The Maintenance Manager will lead the team to ensure highway safety compliance and will liaise with delivery partners, Elected Members and other stakeholders to improve delivery performance across the Highways North Yorkshire partnership. The role will include some occasional out-of-hours work and standby duties as part of winter service and other emergencies. This is a fantastic opportunity to further develop management skills within the Highways Service and the Council.
Responsibilities
* assess and identify highway maintenance works, including drainage and surface treatments
* prepare design briefs that contribute to the delivery of the local capital programme, including the monitoring and management of local budgets
* assist in delivering our winter service in your capacity as duty manager on a standby rota basis as well as assisting with other emergencies
Qualifications
* Possession of an HNC/HND in a relevant technical discipline, or equivalent qualifications
* Proven capability to deputise effectively for the Area Manager when required
* Extensive experience in highways-related projects and operations
* A strong background in designing and implementing maintenance and improvement schemes
* Proficiency in budgetary planning, monitoring, and control
* Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with the public
* A strong commitment to delivering outstanding customer service
* A clear understanding of political processes and awareness of the public sector environment
