Salary
£50,354 to £60,036 per annum, including a basic salary, skills payment, and a concessionary payment of £2,758. A one‑off recruitment bonus of £3,500 will be paid in two instalments—£1,750 on arrival and £1,750 after successful completion of probation. Additional salary increments may be available after a successful skills assessment.
Responsibilities
As a Senior Software Engineer you will design and architect both new and existing systems, establish and promote best practices, and deliver high‑quality software solutions that support GCHQ’s mission to keep the UK safe. You will review pull requests, define code‑review, branching, and deployment strategies, and work across a variety of software engineering frameworks. Operating at a deep technical level, you will apply expertise in languages and frameworks such as JavaScript, Java, Node.js, Python, Rust, Go, and .NET. For Cheltenham roles we also seek experience in data‑intensive software engineering, big‑data technologies and cloud platforms.

About You
You are an experienced Senior Software Engineer with modern programming knowledge across Golang, Java, JavaScript, .NET, Node.js, Python and Rust. You have led Agile project teams, evaluated customer business requirements and delivered high‑quality software solutions that make a real impact. You can mentor others, collaborate effectively and stay abreast of emerging technologies. Relevant backgrounds include software engineering, security, site‑reliability engineering and data engineering.
Qualifications
* Evidence of ownership of a technical project or piece of work
* Proficiency in multiple modern languages/frameworks (Golang, Java, JavaScript, .NET, Node.js, Python, Rust)
* Experience working in an Agile technical project team
* Demonstrated competency as a Software Engineer
* For Cheltenham roles only: experience in data‑intensive software engineering or data engineering, using big‑data technologies and cloud platforms

Working Conditions
The role is based in Cheltenham or Manchester; you must live within a commutable distance. The position requires the highest level of security clearance, Developed Vetting (DV). Candidates must be British citizens or hold dual British nationality. The role offers a range of working patterns, including full‑time, part‑time and compressed hours, with hybrid working arrangements where business needs allow. Flexible start and finish times may also be available.
