Trainee Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner

This exciting role has been developed to support patient care and NHS service delivery.

If you are a highly organised and motivated individual committed to the NHS and patient care, we would welcome your application to study for the professional role.

You will be trained to deliver Low Intensity Psychological Interventions, the cornerstone of NHS Talking Therapies Services.

These are permanent posts working 37.5 hours per week.

The training and salary are being supported with public funds. We would ask you to apply to only one Trust and one Higher Education Institution (HEI). Multiple applications can disrupt service delivery and undermine clinical delivery and patient care.

If your application is successful, you will be required to submit a PGCertLIPI academic screening form, academic award certificates (including transcripts) and arrange for your referee to submit their academic reference. The deadline for this is 01/06/2026.

You will also be required to attend a suitability screening with the university on Tuesday 16/06/2026. Your attendance is vital to enable your application to continue.

If you are successful, you will be invited to an interview with our service held on Tuesday 28/07, Wednesday 29/07 or Thursday 30/07 2026. The interviews will be conducted in person.

You will be required to commence in October 2026; dates to be confirmed at interview.


Main duties of the job

This role has been developed to support patient care and NHS service delivery. You will be a trainee within Worcestershire NHS Talking Therapy Service (formerly IAPT services), which will be delivering high volume, low intensity interventions and will assist in improving services for clients with a range of common mental health disorders, particularly anxiety and depression, within a stepped care framework that is equitable, non‑stigmatising, accessible, responsive to local need and available to people aged 16 years and over.

The programme of learning is delivered by Birmingham University. This will be offering person‑centred assessment and lower‑intensity psychological interventions providing different treatment modalities to our patients. The patients are presenting common mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. The postholder will receive appropriate support and training throughout their training journey.

You will be required to attend a minimum of 1 to 2 days teaching, undertake 1 day of self‑directed study and provide 2–3 days of clinical practice per week (total of 5 days per week). You will need to be available to work from the Redditch/Malvern base in person across five working days to meet service need with minimal remote working. You will need to be able to travel to and from localities and university therefore please consider these conditions when making your application.

Job responsibilities

The postholder will be expected to work with people with different cultural backgrounds, using interpreters when necessary and should be committed to equal opportunities.

The postholder will be expected to undertake professional training in low intensity psychological interventions alongside the delivery of psychological therapies as part of the Stepped Care Model. Working at Step 2 the postholder will learn and deliver Step 2 low intensity psychological interventions.

As an employed learner, the post holder will attend university training in accordance with academic requirements of professional training and will undertake clinical activities and log these to demonstrate learning as commensurate with an applied programme of study.

Person Specification


Skills & Abilities

* Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English in both verbal and written formats
* High level of enthusiasm and motivation and able to work under pressure
* Highly developed organisational skills
* Ability to be self‑reflective and use clinical supervision and personal development positively and effectively


Experience

* A minimum of 12 months of direct clinical experience of working with people who have common mental health problems and may have a physical health condition; this may be one‑to‑one or in a group setting or 3 years part‑time voluntary experience with an established charity (such as MIND, Samaritans) offering interventions to people experiencing common mental health issues
* Demonstrates high standards in written communication
* Able to write clear reports and letters
* Experience of working in Primary Care Services delivering low intensity interventions both one‑to‑one and groups
* Worked in a service where agreed targets/KPIs are in place demonstrating clinical outcomes
* Evidence of working in the local community preferably around Worcestershire or Herefordshire.

Qualifications

* M Level Study (Postgraduate) Route: Undergraduate degree in a relevant subject or equivalent, for example, a registered nurse or allied health professional or H Level Study (Graduate) Certificate Route: If you do not have a degree you may study at H level and you will require at least 2 advanced level GCEs or equivalent, such as a BTEC, (GNVQ or NVQ at levels 3 or 4)
* For those applicants whose first language is not English, or for those whose first degree was not taught in English, the minimum requirements for TOEFL/IELTS are: 100 for internet‑based TOEFL with no less than 23 in any band, 600 for paper‑based TOEFL (TWE4) or 7.0 for IELTS with no less than 6.5 in any band
* I understand that I will be asked to provide original certificates to verify my qualifications at point of offer.


Knowledge

* Ability to attend to learning and apply theory within clinical practice.
* Demonstrate how you have worked with adults with common mental health disorders within adult clinical settings
* An understanding of cognitive behavioural therapy and how this is used within talking therapies
* Knowledge and understanding of the psychological wellbeing Practitioner role
* Worked in a service where agreed targets/KPIs are in place demonstrating clinical outcomes
