What it's like to work here
As an Ullswater/Grasmere Ranger, you will be part of a team of three working predominantly across these areas, but you will regularly be asked to work on the wider portfolio including Windermere, Langdales and Coniston. You will report daily to the Area Ranger. Over the last 10 years working with our farm tenants, we have completed some great nature recovery projects. These include 2 km of river restoration, over 500 ha of wood pasture and peatland restoration, along with hay meadow restoration through the planting of tens of thousands of wildflower plugs. You will be assisting our ambition for nature recovery by improving habits through tree planting, invasive species control and woodland management. This will involve working closely with our farm tenants, local community, volunteers and other organisations. A major part of the role will be looking after our estate, which includes boundary repairs, maintaining and improving access for our many visitors.
What you'll be doing
You’ll be helping to protect and care for habitats, wildlife, buildings and machinery. You’ll pass on your knowledge and enthusiasm to encourage others to love this area as much as you do. Whenever and wherever you come across people, you’ll take the time to talk to them and answer their questions, rather than rushing away to the next task.
You’ll make sure that the conservation work and outdoor experiences on the land in your care are of the highest standard. You’ll build relationships in the local community, proudly representing the Trust and letting people know about the work you and the team are doing.
You can view the full role profile for this role in the document attached. You don't need to have all the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what’s possible in this role.
Who we're looking for
We’d love to hear from you if you’re:
1. practically experienced in conservation work, to protect and improve habitats and landscapes
2. happy to talk to all kinds of people about the work you’re doing, and why it matters
3. hard-working and willing to learn
4. able to work safely, using risk assessments and following guidelines
5. experienced in managing land, access and conservation, and working outdoors
6. able to use machinery and equipment, with relevant certificates
7. a driver with a full UK driving licence
