Main duties of the job

Are you looking to develop your knowledge and skills in paediatric cardiology whilst providing great care? University Hospitals Southampton NHS Trust is currently looking to recruit to a middle grade fellow post (registrar equivalent) to contribute to the provision of paediatric cardiac services as part of this dynamic and progressive department.

We are looking for dynamic, motivated and hardworking individuals who are interested in developing their knowledge and skills in paediatric cardiology. You need to be a team player with good communication skills. Previous paediatric experience, including being conversant with the management of paediatric emergencies is essential. Previous experience in paediatric cardiology is desirable, but not critical. GMC registration is required.

The paediatric cardiology unit at University Hospitals Southampton NHS Trust is a level 1 congenital cardiothoracic centre and part of the Oxford - Southampton Congenital Cardiac Network. Cardiac services covering the entire spectrum of care are provided for all age groups and it is one of the major centres for fetal medicine, neonatal and infant care and adult congenital heart disease, covering the population of South and Central England. As one of the few fully collocated congenital cardiac services in the UK, close liaison exists across departments including: adult congenital cardiology, intensive care and regional specialist paediatric services.

Job responsibilities

Duties include ward cover of the paediatric cardiology ward, outpatient clinic work and on‑call (including out of hours). In addition, you will have input into the care of congenital heart disease on the paediatric and neonatal intensive care units and on the general paediatric wards. You will be expected to perform clinical evaluation, echocardiographic assessment as necessary (with appropriate training and support), participate in multidisciplinary meetings and other educational activities. Research is encouraged.

The appointee will be requested to work on a 1 in 9 on‑call rota, which is fully compliant with the New Deal.

Additional Information

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non‑training fellow doctors and dentists). Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave.

Grades for Trust appointed (non‑training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary plus any additional remuneration (e.g., additional hours, weekend allowance).

Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5;

* Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training
* Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g., FRCP, FRCA, FRCS)
* A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee)

Person Specification


Qualifications, Training & Experience

* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
* GMC registration with a licence to practise
* Registrar experience in general paediatrics and neonatal care
* Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
* Experience in a paediatric cardiac unit.
* Experience of teaching undergraduates / postgraduates


Aptitudes and skills

* Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi‑professional teams
* Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
* Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
* Ability to perform paediatric procedures like intravenous cannulation.
* Interest in Paediatric Cardiology
* Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
* Understanding of audit
* Knowledge of cardiology
* Able to perform echocardiography
* Evidence of previous audit and/or research activity or interest
