Graduate Building Structures Engineer - St Albans at AECOM
Our UK & Ireland business provides a comprehensive portfolio of multidisciplinary engineering skills, with our structural engineers playing a leading and influential role in the development of building projects. We are engaged in a wide range of projects including world-class sporting venues, commercial properties, healthcare, higher education and research facilities, hotels and resorts, industrial and manufacturing developments. Projects are located in the UK and increasingly overseas. Examples of current projects in the Structural Engineering Practice include:
* Houses of Parliament, London – refurbishment of Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben) and lead engineers for the Northern Estate Programme.
* Curragh Racecourse, Ireland – redevelopment with saddling stalls, museum arm, and grandstand, capable of accommodating up to 10,000 spectators.
* Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam – design of a new 400 m long pier and 300 m link bridge to expand terminal capacity.
* Project North Park, Exeter – new £70m research facility for the University of Exeter.
* Foreign and Commonwealth Office Seismic Retrofit Programme – structural investigation and design of overseas embassy buildings for safety and resilience.
* Crossrail Paddington Arch, London – new steel framed structure within a Grade I listed building with heritage and coordination considerations.
* Al Janoub Stadium, Qatar – 45,000 capacity World Cup stadium with advanced use of BIM.
* Chateau La Coste, Provence – civil and structural engineering services for expressive art galleries.
All buildings are conceived, designed and constructed collaboratively, often involving other internal teams to deliver an integrated service. We seek graduates who are enthusiastic about improving the built environment and who want to apply their engineering skills to real, impactful projects.
Job Responsibilities
As a graduate joining AECOM’s Structural Engineering Practice, you will be placed in a team with an experienced engineer who will support your early career development. Your key responsibilities may include the following:
* Assisting in the development of projects through the different design stages
* Developing analytical and design skills
* Producing designs, calculations, sketches, diagrams, design intents and final working drawings for building structures under supervision
* Collecting and analysing data under supervision
* Using various tools to solve engineering problems
* Attending meetings and workshops with other design professionals such as architects
* Liaising with other disciplines to coordinate designs
* Working to agreed budgets and timescales under supervision
* Contributing to hazard elimination and reduction
* Conducting site visits during construction to inspect works
* Contributing to a wide range of projects as workload dictates
You will start working on live projects almost immediately. The experiential learning will be supplemented with training as part of our ICE-accredited graduate scheme, including lunchtime seminars and formal training courses. This training provides a holistic development experience bridging university and professional practice. Topics include:
* Design methods for various structural elements using different materials
* Practical application of design software and BIM (Revit)
* Presenting engineering solutions and communication techniques
* Commercial awareness and contracts
* Health & Safety
Throughout the scheme you will develop design skills across materials and building types, begin to understand commercial arrangements and contract types, and progressively take on more design and project responsibility.
Qualifications
Masters degree accredited by a professional engineering institution such as the Institution of Civil Engineers or the Institution of Structural Engineers.
* Enthusiasm and drive to become a Chartered Engineer
* Demonstration of initiative and the desire to develop academically, engineering or life experiences
