Senior/Principal Geotechnical Engineer – Responsibilities
We are looking for an experienced, well‑rounded senior or principal geotechnical engineer based in either our Birmingham or Bristol offices. The role will include mentoring junior engineers, leading projects, managing client relationships, and ensuring technical and commercial success.
* Lead geotechnical design and investigation projects for infrastructure and energy sectors (defence, rail, highways, water, renewable energy, low‑carbon engineering, nuclear power).
* Mentor junior geotechnical engineers.
* Develop and deliver high‑quality design reports and technical documentation.
* Lead design teams and liaise with clients on earthworks and foundation packages, including Railway Geotechnics Contracts (CRE responsibility).
* Conduct and manage geotechnical investigations, numerical modelling (GeoStudio, Repute, Wallap and other standard software).
* Apply CDM regulations and apply AI/ML tools in geotechnical design.
* Negotiate and manage commercial aspects of projects, ensuring right first time delivery.
* Travel on short assignments within the UK and overseas.
Qualifications
* Degree in civil engineering or geology, preferably MSc or equivalent (post‑graduate qualification in a geotechnical subject).
* Chartered status as a civil engineer or geologist.
* Proven experience in a fast‑moving engineering consultancy environment.
* Experience in geotechnical design and numerical analysis of structures, foundations, slopes and anchors using appropriate tools and workflows.
* Experience with digital geotechnical engineering, including AI and ML applications.
* Excellent interpersonal, communication and leadership skills.
* Good commercial track record and ability to negotiate project success.
* Strong report writing skills and attention to detail.
* Valid UK driving licence and willingness to travel.
* Potential need for security clearance (UKSV) – applicants should be able to provide proof of 5‑year UK residency if required.
