The Role
The Metrology Operations Lead is responsible for the day‑to‑day leadership and development of the Metrology Lab team, typically comprising 5‑10 individuals including apprentices, technicians, and manufacturing engineers. They ensure the lab operates safely, efficiently, and to the highest technical and quality standards, supporting the wider workshop.
Key responsibilities include:
* Ensuring all metrology activities follow approved processes and act as a role model for professionalism, integrity, and technical excellence.
* Maintaining health, safety, and wellbeing of the team, and stopping unsafe or low‑quality activity.
* Delivering Safety, Quality, Cost, and Delivery (SQCD) performance, ensuring tasks meet accuracy, cost, and time expectations.
* Managing team absence, behaviours, and performance, including performance reviews, coaching, feedback, and development.
* Leading and nurturing a culture of continuous improvement, standardising measurement methods and documentation, and increasing workflow efficiency.
* Managing the lab schedule, prioritising and allocating inspection work, and ensuring timely delivery of results.
* Owning strategic direction and future capability of the Metrology Lab, identifying skill gaps, recommending technologies, and developing technical competency.
Person Specification
Essential Skills / Qualifications / Experience
* Significant hands‑on expertise in at least one core metrology discipline (e.g., CMM, structured light scanning, XCT, laser tracking, or surface inspection).
* Broad knowledge of complementary measurement technologies and ability to compare methods.
* Ability to mentor junior metrologists and review measurement plans.
* Practical understanding of GD&T and interpretation of engineering drawings.
* Comfortable leading technical decision‑making, even when not the hands‑on expert.
* Experience managing teams to achieve business objectives.
* Understanding and experience of implementing Lean manufacturing principles.
* Ability to translate customer requirements into capability deployment.
* Determined and resilient in applying quality ethos and standards.
* Ability to influence without authority.
* High level of technical and quality process knowledge.
* Good oral communication skills with a range of stakeholders.
* Precise and concise written communication skills.
* Previous responsibility for resource planning, succession planning, or team development pathways.
* Ability to lead a team through ambiguous or challenging situations.
* Ability to work under pressure.
