Base pay range

We are currently recruiting for a Principal Regulatory Lawyer.


Location & coverage

The position will be offered on a remote working basis, with a requirement to attend our main hub spaces on occasion for meetings.


Key Accountabilities

* Lead strategic advisor on all aspects of health and safety law and management, providing advice across and at all levels of the organisation (including the Executive and the Board) on legal risk and compliance.
* Advising the Trust on compliance with health and safety law in respect of colleague (employee and volunteer) safety.
* Supporting the Senior Environment Lawyer, providing legal advice on all aspects of environmental and reservoirs regulatory compliance, including environmental permits, abstraction licensing, reservoirs, and wildlife protections.
* Managing the Trust’s response to incidents leading to enforcement action by a regulator.
* Providing legal advice on a fit‑for‑purpose approach in respect of the management of health and safety risks of public use of the Trust’s inland waterway network.
* Supporting the development of Trust health and safety policy and processes, including risk assessment, reporting and investigations.
* Advising the Trust’s Health & Safety team on regulatory aspects of health and safety law, assisting in responding to coroners reports, inquests and HSE enquiries, notices and enforcement action.


Knowledge, Experience & Skills

* Qualified lawyer with significant health and safety and regulatory experience gained in private practice or in‑house.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills & confidence in engaging with a diverse range of clients at different levels.
* Track record of taking instructions and providing proactive, expert, timely & pragmatic legal advice.
* Willingness & desire to learn.
* Displays a can‑do mentality, & an ability to work independently.
* Ability to give pragmatic and strategic advice and to solve problems to meet the needs of the Trust.
* Ability to work autonomously, manage a wide and varied caseload and meet tight deadlines.
* Comply with Canal & River Trust Health & Safety policy and defined standards, report incidents, accidents and near misses.
* Assess the risks and make adjustments to work methods where appropriate.
* Ensure all equipment (PPE, plant, materials, etc.) is appropriate for the task. Consider your own and others behaviour. Be aware of your own responsibilities regarding safeguarding and to support our commitment to providing safe environments and working practices that promote and protect the safety and welfare of children, young people and adults at risk at all times.
