Job Description
To lead a team undertaking roads maintenance and improvement works.
Requirements
To organise labour, plant and materials for their workplace.
Erect and remove temporary signs, barriers and cones.
Excavate in any material by hand or with power assisted tools, backfill trenches, and consolidate, prepare surfaces for construction purposes.
Erection of formwork, placing of reinforcing steel, and the placing and finishing off of concrete.
Placing of kerbs, slabs, paving blocks, walling, etc., to the correct line and levels.
Laying of drains, gullies, road furniture, and the like to the correct line and levels.
Laying of coated materials to correct levels.
Erection of all kinds of fencing, marker posts, sign, and lighting poles.
Operate powered hand tools, minor plant, and machinery.
Observe all current Health and Safety legislation and Council policies to ensure safety of the operative, the workforce, and the public.
Keep records and measure completed works.
Participate in the delivery of the out-of-hours Winter and Summer service.
The Individual
Knowledge and experience of roads maintenance, street lighting, or similar construction works.
An understanding of health & safety and safe working practices.
Experience of supervising a workforce undertaking roads maintenance, street lighting, or similar construction works.
Must be literate and numerate and able to act on instructions.
Full Car Driving Licence and LGV licence.
SVQ in Highway Maintenance / Road Building.
Possession of a Construction Skills Certificate Scheme Card.
Ability to clearly communicate instructions to others.
Self-confident and self-motivated.
Ability to carry out daily checks of plant/vehicles.
Knowledge and ability to undertake a wide range of roads maintenance and street lighting activities.
Flexible and adaptable.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships within a team.
Well-organised, helpful, and able to show initiative.
Courtesy, politeness, and effective communication skills.
Manual and physical dexterity for outdoor work and construction sites, in accordance with manual handling regulations.
Ability to work flexibly to meet service needs, including participation in out-of-hours Winter and Summer services.
