Nursing Associate, ED


NHS AfC: Band 4


Job overview

To work as part of the nursing and multidisciplinary team to provide high quality Emergency care for patients presenting with major and minor injuries and illnesses.

Is safe, competent and confident in the performance of a wide variety of activities indirectly supervised by a registered practitioner in providing Emergency care.

Monitors patients and implements care following agreed pathway.


Main duties of the job

Ensure a welcoming, caring and safe environment of patients and visitors to the department.
Carry out observations, document and follow escalation procedure on identification of a deteriorating patient as identified in the patient pathway.
Initiate Basic life support for a collapsed patient until medical help arrives.
Assist with safe transfer of patients within department. Perform hospital transfer and handover of patient care for agreed patients.
Provide clinical skills such as recording of 12 lead ECG, insertion of peripheral cannulation, venepuncture, female and male urinary catheterisation, insertion of NG tubes, minor wound dressings and wound closure, application of plaster of Paris and other limb splintage.
Implement, and monitor patient care following nursing care plans and patient pathways. Report progress to registered practitioner.
Maintain up-to-date, comprehensive and accurate records of clinical care, the patients’ condition and other relevant information in accordance with the NMC Standards for Record Keeping.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Be aware, active and follow protocol for all types of internal and external major incidents including flu pandemic and CBRN incidents.
Assist to identify and care for patients with mental health and vulnerable patients who lack capacity. Act in the patient’s best interest and apply knowledge of Mental Health and Mental Capacity Act in implementing care.
Provide one to one care for high risk vulnerable patients at risk from absconding or falls.
Assist to identify risk factors which could cause injury or harm to patients whilst in the Emergency department if left unidentified such as falls risk, pressure ulcer and malnutrition risk.
Follow safe discharge home policy, provide appropriate follow up plan of care, health education advise.
Act in a professional manner at all times, maintain professional communication and attitudes with service users and colleagues. Keep services users informed of waiting times and planned care pathway.
Follows policies/procedures designed to prevent hospital acquired infection.
Monitor and maintain unit equipment in each area of care, reporting problems as appropriate.
Be proficient in the use of information technology utilized within the ward area.
Report staff sickness/absence immediately to the nurse in charge of the department.
Work with MDT to provide Trusts Emergency 4 hour target for service users.


Person specification


Experience

* 6 months acute experience in hospital
* Managing cohort of patients
* Work without supervision


Skills

* Venepuncture and cannulation
* Basic ECG interpretation
* Able to challenge poor care, provide evidence


Knowledge

* NMC code Examples
* Trust Values
* Scope of practice of Band 4

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
