Job overview
A vacancy arises from November 2025 for an enthusiastic and well-qualified teacher to teach RE/RS at our Senior School. Applications are welcome from newly qualified teachers, or from more experienced teachers. The role is temporary covering maternity leave until the end of the summer term th July The role will predominantly teach our A-Level pupils.
Birkdale currently has two main RE teachers: one full-time head of department and a part-time second in department. Lessons are taught in three fully equipped classrooms, characterful attic rooms of a large Victorian house. Developed over a number of years, the RE department has excellent teaching resources.
In Y7 - Y9, pupils are taught RE in form groups of no more than 25 pupils. RE in General Studies in Y10 is taught in small discussion groups of 10 to 12. GCSE RS is not compulsory and normally attracts between 10 and 20 pupils each year. A Level RS currently attracts a small group of around 10 pupils. In years with larger numbers, A Level groups are never more than 15.
With the freedom to work outside the national curriculum, Birkdale's RE curriculum in Y7-9 has a distinctly philosophical character and provides enough time for a creative exploration of some of the key theological and ethical concepts of the Christian faith. Courses on Judaism (Y7), Islam (Y8) and Eastern concepts of religion (Y9) ensure pupils develop a wider religious literacy. Lessons are often discussion based, designed to develop our pupils' thinking skills and moral reasoning. Pupils respond extremely well to RE at Birkdale, producing some outstanding work in the process.
GCSE RS follows the Eduqas syllabus, Route A (C120P3): Contemporary Issues; Christianity and Islam. A Level RS follows the AQA syllabus (7062): Philosophy of Religion and Ethics; Christianity and Dialogues. Historically, the second in department has taught philosophy of religion and aspects of Christian theology at A-level.
Consistent with Birkdale's outstanding record academically, pupils opting for both GCSE and A-level have achieved excellent results, often better than their academic predictions suggest.
