BMW Group Plant Hams Hall is a modern, state-of-the-art engine manufacturing facility located just outside Birmingham, UK. The plant produces the latest generation of three and four cylinder petrol engines as well as V8 and V12 engines, and supports plug-in hybrid vehicles as part of BMW Group’s global production network.
BMW Plant Hams Hall, Birmingham - Level 6 Control Engineer - 4 Year Apprenticeship (August 2026)
Responsibilities
* Join the Maintenance team to ensure all production equipment (mechanical and electrical) operates efficiently and safely.
* Repair and rebuild machinery, design process improvements, and assess the need for future repairs to prevent issues.
* Learn and perform tasks as your apprenticeship progresses; the Maintenance team will support your development to ensure an engaging and valuable apprenticeship experience.
* Be part of the BMW Hams Hall maintenance team for assembly & logistics systems.
* Contribute to a team of around 100 highly motivated and experienced technical experts.
Training and Environment
* Modern high voltage battery production in small series and highly automated engine assembly facilities for 3- and 4-cylinder petrol engines.
* Flexible production system for V8 and V12 petrol engines with extensive automation, PLCs, robots, PC systems, and automatic cells.
* Exposure to artificial intelligence solutions and a digitalization/innovation environment.
Your Training
The apprenticeship provides study of modern automotive production technology and the latest manufacturing innovations. The four-year programme enables exposure to robotics, controls systems, machining, fluid power, electronics, welding, and more. The programme begins end of August 2026 and includes a focus on personal and professional development, with exposure to Agile, Lean Manufacturing and Problem Solving.
Your Year-on-Year Progression
The first year is a learning environment with practical training to qualify for Employers Units of Competence, covering disciplines such as milling and turning, electrical/electronic circuits, control systems, fluid power, PLCs, welding, and more.
In years 2 and 3, you continue academic requirements with on-the-job placements across various areas of the business, focusing on development, creation, and quality checking of products and systems. On-site training may include rotations at other BMW UK sites.
In year 4, the on-the-job training becomes more targeted to your final role. You may begin shift work to integrate with your team. You will undertake fully funded study toward the attainment of a BEng (Hons) in Manufacturing Engineering.
Qualifications and Experience
* A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at level 5/C (or above) including Maths and English.
* A minimum of 3 A levels grade C or above in a mathematical subject and a Science, Technology, Engineering-related subject, or a BTEC Level 3 in a relevant Engineering or Technology discipline.
