Overview
We have a rare opportunity within our regional medium secure Hospital for an experienced nurse to join our multi-disciplinary team. We are looking for a Band 7 Ward Manager to lead our busy Assessment ward and ICU, front-end of our service, supporting our most vulnerable patients. The role is varied, challenging and fast paced. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in mental health, be resilient, reliable and a compassionate leader. Interviews for this vacancy will be held on 28 November 2025.
Please note applicants will be required to pay for their DBS check. The cost of the DBS application is £26.40 (standard) or £54.40 (enhanced), deducted from salary over the first 2 months of employment. You are encouraged to enrol for the DBS Update Service. An annual fee of £16 applies.

As a Ward Manager, you will:
* Have 24-hour managerial responsibility for the ward (24-hour responsibility for the Hospital when on-call)
* Provide a visible and accessible leadership presence in ward settings to patients, carers and staff
* Provide effective direct management to the direct care staff on the ward
* Ensure that excellent standards of care are maintained on the ward at all times
* You will be required to complete mandatory training to assist your professional development

Job responsibilities
* Manage the budget for the ward and extended team on a day-to-day basis
* Ensure that all staff receive appropriate supervision and performance reviews
* Ensure that excellent clinical standards are maintained at all times
* Provide strong clinical leadership at ward and hospital level
* Monitor standards of clinical care, the ward environment and hotel services
* Act as investigating officer for complaints/incidents as required
* Evaluate service deficits, make recommendations and initiate change to ensure service improvement
* Improve the quality of patient care experience using Releasing Time To Care initiatives
* Oversee audits within the hospital as appropriate
* Ensure correct implementation of the Mental Health Act within the ward
* Develop and sustain effective relationships with outside agencies and stakeholders
* Represent the hospital at directorate and Trust-wide forums as required
* Ensure maximum efficiency in the use of ward and extended resources
Person Specification
Physical requirements – Essential
* Able to perform the full range of duties
* Able to undertake training in the management of violence reduction
* Able to occasionally escort and maintain custody of patients both within and outside the secure area if required
* Able to respond to serious emergency incidents
Qualifications – Essential
* 1st level RMN
* Degree level or evidence of equivalent experience
Desirable – Mentorship course; Post-registration leadership and/or management qualification
Training – Essential
* Mental Health Act
* Appropriate management training
Experience – Essential
* Adult mental health
* Clinical supervision and staff appraisal via PAD
* Involving service users and carers in service planning and monitoring
* Significant experience at senior nursing level (Band 6 or above)
* Experienced leader and manager
Desirable – Leading and managing services in a forensic setting; experience in secure environments with MDOs; change management; service development; clinical/managerial supervision; working with an offending population
Knowledge – Essential
* Least restrictive practices, recovery-focused approach, and patient involvement
* Legislation and national drivers affecting clinical services and nursing practice
* Leadership for service developments and quality improvements
Desirable – Leading and managing within a medium secure setting
