Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist – Community Recovery Team South
East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) is seeking a fully qualified consultant to join the Community Recovery Team South (CRT) in Newham. The role offers a unique opportunity to work across inpatient and community settings, providing integrated, holistic care to adults with serious mental illness.
Job Overview
The successful candidate will lead clinical care for CRT caseloads and sector inpatients, ensuring high quality, evidence‑based practice and seamless collaboration with primary, acute and specialist services. You will also take part in ELFT’s Improvement Science in Action training and contribute to the Trust’s quality improvement initiatives.
Main Responsibilities
* Take overall clinical responsibility for service users on your CRT caseload and adjacent sector inpatient wards.
* Deliver high‑quality care across settings, ensuring adherence to policies and procedures.
* Develop and maintain close working links with GP partners to provide integrated, holistic care.
* Collaborate with acute locality treatment wards to ensure the right care is provided in the right setting.
* Participate in and champion quality improvement projects and improvement science training.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
* Fully registered with the General Medical Council.
* On the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT.
* Completed a minimum of 3 years of higher training in psychiatric posts, or possess prior consultant level training.
* Member or Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (or equivalent).
* Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983 and possess Approved Clinician status.
Essential Knowledge & Experience
* Clinical work in General Adult Psychiatry at ST4‑6 or consultant level within the last 3 years.
* Excellent knowledge and application of the Mental Health Act.
* Commitment to culturally sensitive practice and awareness of ethnic minority issues.
* Good understanding of social factors relevant to psychiatry.
* Experience working on an inpatient ward.
Desirable Criteria
* Experience in service development and introduction of new mental health services.
* Knowledge of recovery‑informed service delivery and partnership with patients as experts by experience.
* Inpatient experience at consultant level.
Organisational Skills / Abilities
* Leadership skills and ability to work within multidisciplinary, multi‑model teams.
* Capacity to manage complex workloads and support colleagues.
* Consultation/liaison skills to services, teams and individuals.
* Commitment to multidisciplinary collaboration and service user‑led development.
* Project management ability.
Clinical Skills
* Expertise in risk assessment and evidence‑based intervention after self‑harm.
* Confidence in therapeutic risk taking.
* Commitment to clinical governance.
Teaching and Supervision
* Experience teaching junior staff, medical undergraduates, postgraduates and non‑medical mental health professionals.
* Good teaching and communication skills.
* Desirable: medical education qualification.
Research and Audit
* Experience of research work, particularly with general hospital patients or those with medically unexplained symptoms.
* Audit experience.
* Desirable: grant‑funded projects and publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
Other Requirements
* Excellent communication skills.
* Ability to work well with colleagues.
* Desirable: media training.
