About the Role
You\'ll lead our transformation from modern data consultancy to AI-native data agency, working with teams and clients to build modern, cost-efficient data platforms addressing complex business challenges. You\'ll champion best practices and shape our delivery model from problem scoping through build and maintenance. Critical to success is fostering a builder mindset. We ship iterative, 80/20 solutions that we refine over time - not perfect solutions that don\'t deliver. You will set the technical direction for Tasman\'s engineering practice, architecting AI-native data platforms while empowering senior engineers to lead their teams autonomously. The Head of Engineering role leads a combined Analytics and Data Engineering team. This role will set the vision for the team, break this vision down into a roadmap and execute on the roadmap. Your credibility is established through a strong technical background and the ability to tackle engineering problems of varying complexities. As the Head of Engineering, you will: Lead our combined Analytics and Data Engineering team with distinct but linked approaches Own and execute the engineering vision and roadmap, with AI integration as the primary transformation driver Integrate LLMs/GenAI across all engineering work (pipelines, dbt, documentation, QA) - making AI augmentation standard practice Define technical standards balancing AI automation with human expertise to achieve significant productivity gains Act as product owner for internal engineering initiatives while building a feedback-first culture Team Management
Your main role is bringing technical leadership but as we are a small company you will also coach & mentor Staff Engineers. Key responsibilities: Direct management of 2-3 staff engineers who will own day-to-day management and 1-1’s. Influence hiring, recruitment, onboarding and retention strategies Maintain and build upon our "we solve business problems with data + AI - we don’t just write SQL" culture Collaborate on Career Management Framework with leadership team and Engineering Managers Enable staff engineers to deliver great technical standards and best practices across engineering Ensure daily AI tool usage across the team to ensure even distribution of new skills. This role needs to maintain a level of technical proficiency and knowledge. You will keep abreast of new technologies and innovation in the engineering and data landscape. Maintain overview across multiple squads without single-client focus. Understand technical decisions' commercial impact. Responsibilities include: Ultimate accountability for engineering quality across all projects Translate AI efficiency gains to margin improvement through reusable patterns Support new delivery models (fixed-price, capability goals) while protecting margin Collaborate on complex technical work, maximising impact through engineers Engage early in new projects for contextual knowledge Create "spear fishing" processes - general awareness with targeted deep-dives Support sales with technical authority with pragmatism. Core member of Senior Leadership Team (SLT), representing engineering voice.
