Job Summary

Consultant in Vascular and Endovascular surgery with an interest in foot salvage

Job Summary

Consultant in Vascular and Endovascular surgery with an interest in foot salvage

Applications are sought for the appointment of a consultant vascular and endovascular surgeon to join the Birmingham Vascular Centre. One of the largest vascular units in the country, it covers a population of ~2.4 million in Birmingham, Solihull, and Sandwell with services based at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) NHS Trust and at Sandwell and West Birmingham (SWBH) NHS Trust. It is also a tertiary referral centre for the West Midlands and beyond for endovascular treatment of patients with complex aortic pathology. We recently gained approval to replace our current hybrid theatre which will future proof our state-of-the-art theatre capability for the next 10 years.

The service also provides support to a number of services including stroke, sarcoma surgery, spinal surgery, and the Major Trauma team. It also supports teams at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospitals.

The specialty is currently engaged in improving the Foot salvage pathway via multidisciplinary and cross sector collaboration. We are seeking an enthusiastic and forward-thinking colleague with open vascular surgery and endovascular expertise to support services and future development in this rapidly expanding area.

Contact Rachel Sam Consultant vascular surgeon and Clinical service lead for informal enquiries on 0121 371 4903.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

The appointee will deliver services at both SWBH and UHB NHS Trusts. The job plan of 10PAs has appropriate sessions to deliver the caseload with weekly all day operating list and regular endovascular sessions. They will have appropriate mentoring support including sessions of dual operating as needed. Frequency of on call (1 in 10) and cross site working is shared equitably among all colleagues. The final job plan will be agreed with the Clinical service lead.

The appointee will become part of the foot MDT with weekly sessions in the multidisciplinary foot clinic. They will also be expected to contribute to a quality improvement scheme to reduce rates of major lower limb amputation in Birmingham.

The service is committed to improving efficiency and progressive ways of working with job plans configured to minimise loss of activity and poor utilisation of resources. It is expected that the post holder will work flexibly with colleagues to deliver a high quality and efficient service.

We actively support continuing professional development with dedicated time for study leave, appraisal and revalidation in all consultant job plans. We have active teaching and research programmes which the appointee will be encouraged to contribute to.

The team are committed to improving quality of care through a varied audit programme, regular Governance meetings and contribution to the National Vascular Registry. It is expected that the appointees will be actively involved in these programmes.

Job Description

The appointee will provide vascular surgical services at both SWBH and UHB Trusts. The final job plan will be agreed with the CSL (Rachel Sam). In addition to the general vascular workload, the appointee will become part of the foot MDT with weekly sessions in the multidisciplinary foot clinic. It is expected that they will contribute to a quality improvement scheme to reduce rates of major lower limb amputation in the area.

The job plan will consist of appropriate clinic, theatre and endovascular sessions to deliver the respective caseload effectively, including a weekly all day operating list. The appointee will have mentoring support including regular sessions of dual operating with more senior colleagues.

The post has clerical and administrative support including a named secretary. Frequency of on call and cross site working is shared equitably among all colleagues. Travel time is built into clinical sessions, with the emphasis on minimising the number of sites a consultant visits on any given day (usually only one site visited per day). Administration time is similarly built into clinical sessions (particularly clinics). Further administration time is provided during our weekly MDT/organisational session on Friday afternoons.

We actively support continuing professional development with dedicated time for study leave, appraisal and revalidation in all consultant job plans.

The service is committed to effective and progressive ways of working. As such working patterns and job plans are configured to maximise service delivery, ensuring that loss of activity due to annual and study leave and on call commitments is minimised by formally recycling sessions. It is expected that the post holder will work flexibly with colleagues. The post is open to candidates who wish to work full time or less than full time. The job plan will consist of 10 Pas: 1.5 SPA and 8.5 DCC consisting flexibly of outpatient clinics, main theatre, endovascular session and day surgery, in addition with weekly planning and MDT.
