The Vacancy
North Lincolnshire Council is seeking a compassionate, experienced, and highly organised Bereavement Services Manager to lead our dedicated team in delivering respectful, professional,legally compliant cremation and burial services.
This is a unique opportunity to manage a vital public service that supports families and communities during their most difficult times. You willbe responsible for the operational leadership of our crematorium and cemeteries, ensuring the highest standards of care, compliance and service delivery.
You will be expected to show compassion and empathy in your approach to your work;you will be required to deliver the highest quality professional, efficient and customer focused service, as well as being responsible for managing and motivating a small professional front-line team.
You will need a customer focused and non-judgmental approach with excellent communication, organisation and IT skills. Empathy, sensitivity, tact and diplomacy, to manage difficult situations is vital, along with a mature attitude.
The role will also see the management of cremated remains and ensuring that the legal framework is strictly adhered to when dealing with exhumation orders.
You must be flexible, thoroughly organised and have the ability to balance conflicting priorities.
In this role you will be:
• Acting as the Council’s Registrar for burials and cremations
• Managing day-to-day operations of cremation and burial services
• Leading and developing a skilled team of staff
• Ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation and health & safety standards
• Overseeing budgets, resources, and service planning
• Liaising with funeral directors, clergy, contractors, and the public
• Handling sensitive and complex issues with empathy and professionalism
Role Requirements
• ICCM/HNC Diploma in Cemetery & Crematorium Management or ILM Level 5+ equivalent
• Cremator Proficiency Certificate (ICCM or FBCA)
• IOSH Health & Safety qualification or equivalent knowledge
• Proven leadership and team management experience
• Strong understanding of cremation and burial legislation and best practices
• Excellent communication, planning, and problem-solving skills
• Personal resilience and the ability to support others through emotionally challenging work
Your working hours will be 37 hours weekand an element of flexibility is required to meet the needs of the service.
Our Woodlands Memorial Park and cemeteries remain open to the public from dawn until dusk every day and you may need to assist on occasion with opening and closing the building as well as the grounds.
