An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic surgeon to join our innovative, friendly team as a RCS Senior Clinical Fellow in Bariatric Surgery. The successful applicant will participate in the General Surgery on-call rota and work as part of the bariatric team caring for bariatric, benign UGI, and emergency general surgical patients.
This post offers an ST7+ equivalent surgical trainee the chance to gain experience in a large bariatric centre, developing competence in performing bariatric procedures independently, managing patients through outpatient settings, and handling bariatric emergencies.
STSFT is the lead Trust in the Wear base unit for the clinical curriculum as part of Newcastle University’s Regional Medical School Concept. The Trust has a £4 million Education and Training Centre supporting undergraduate teaching. The Directorate maintains strong academic links with the University of Newcastle and the University of Sunderland, with honorary lecturer and visiting professorships held by consultant staff. There is also a teaching fellow to support the teaching programme.
Previous postholders have gained significant exposure to upper GI and bariatric surgery, contributed to publications, and presented at national and international meetings, greatly enhancing their career progression.
This is a 12-month fixed-term post (1st November 2025 - 31st October 2026).
Main duties of the job
The internationally renowned Bariatric Unit offers a full range of benign UGI surgeries, performed laparoscopically and robotically by consultant surgeons with a bariatric interest, supported by registrars, foundation doctors, specialist nurses, and dietitians. Procedures include Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy, Gastric Banding, Gastric Balloons, and Revisional Bariatric Surgery. The unit also performs gallstone surgery, common bile duct exploration, anti-reflux surgery, and laparoscopic hernias.
Applicants must hold GMC registration and FRCS or equivalent qualifications. The appointee should have extensive General Surgery experience with documented professional development, laparoscopic surgery experience, and evidence of audit and independent practice. Experience in leading training courses and presenting at regional/national meetings is desirable.

The successful candidate will work with the Upper GI team to deliver inpatient and outpatient care and participate in the General Surgical on-call service. The candidate must hold Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons and demonstrate competence as an Upper GI Surgeon.
The post involves a full-shift emergency rota (1 in 9), supported by FY1 and FY2-CT2 staff, with on-call periods from Monday to Thursday or Friday to Sunday.
