Overview
This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified allied health professional or nurse to join our team to support the Inpatient Therapy Services at Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Trust. You will be responsible for the operational management and the effective and efficient delivery of Inpatient Therapy Services, which consists of Dietetics, Discharge Team, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy. You will support the coordination and monitoring of budgets and agreed national or local performance objectives alongside other team members. You will work alongside a supportive management team including team leaders. Your role will involve supporting the inpatient therapy and discharge teams with operational roles and responsibilities, such as managing rosters, supporting workforce management, recruitment and retention, budgets and service development alongside clinical leads for the areas. You will work alongside other leaders to ensure the safe and effective running of the acute inpatient therapy services. Foundation trusts provide what the health service wants, yet are also free to invest quickly in changes to meet local community needs, with a focus on putting patients first.
Responsibilities
* The Operational Manager for Therapies will manage multi-professional staff within the Inpatient Therapy service and work in partnership with the Team Leader, Inpatient Therapy Service Manager and Head of Therapy Professions on planning, development and continuous improvement of patient care processes. Establish appropriate working relationships with colleagues in services and divisions, within the local health and social care economy, and with external bodies for service issues.
* Lead the modernisation and redesign of clinical services and support the Inpatient Therapy Services Manager and Head of Therapy Professions in interpreting and delivering local and national strategy into practice across the Inpatient Therapy Services.
* Promote a culture of continuous improvement across the Inpatient Therapy Services, contributing to CHFT values and objectives.
* Communicate effectively to manage a wide range of situations, addressing patient care, personnel and resource issues in a timely manner.
* Balance managerial duties with the daily changing needs of the service.
* Provide visible operational leadership within Inpatient Therapy services.
* Be involved in or lead on patient safety and quality initiatives for the Division.
* Represent the Division at meetings for specified activities as required by the Inpatient Therapy Services Manager or Head of Therapy Professions.
* Manage non-clinical and administrative aspects of the service to support clinical teams.
* Assist with the production of business plans and service development; lead specific service plans where appropriate.
* Lead on or support new regional or local initiatives and analyse, monitor and manage patient activity and service performance in line with standards and targets.
* Monitor staff workload and resolve day-to-day management issues; provide development opportunities and supervision for staff; ensure engagement in professional training and development.
* Ensure staff are supported in developing their scope of professional practice and adhere to governance principles and processes.
* Use data to identify complex issues affecting service delivery (capacity and demand) and develop plans and business cases as required.
* Support delivery of high-quality services underpinned by current evidence and best practice; contribute to protocols, standards, guidelines, care pathways, and policies.
* Manage expected/unexpected clinical events within the team and contribute to service improvement projects with the Division.
* Manage resources within the service budget, monitor monthly statements, and consult with the Inpatient Therapy Services Manager on budget expenditure.
* Produce reports on financial, contractual and performance indicators as required and participate in benchmarking, policy setting and review.
* Manage staff within service areas to deliver contracts and targets; organise and conduct team meetings and communicate management policy to the team.
* Collaborate with others to identify and implement service improvements; produce business cases for consideration by the Inpatient Therapy Services Manager and the Head of Therapy Professions.
* Participate in Trust and Division-wide programmes to modernise and personalise services; lead defined service improvement projects as agreed.
* Develop staff through performance reviews and personal development plans; manage sickness, disciplinary and performance issues per Trust policy.
* Demonstrate leadership, ensure effective communication systems, and ensure compliance with Trust policies and protocols.
* Recruit and induct staff per Trust policies; anticipate staff shortages and minimise impact on service delivery; implement risk management in line with governance strategy.
* Support monitoring of governance and best practice; manage conflict resolution related to patient care, personnel and resources; participate in investigations of complaints and incidents as required, with corrective actions and learning outcomes.
* Support staff education by encouraging learning from complaints; support incident reporting and post-incident education; maintain an environment that improves health, safety and security.
* Regularly assess risks to health, safety and security and promote practice improvements; foster a culture where incidents and learning are shared across the division; ensure monthly updates to Risk Registers for the designated area.
Financial and Personal Development
* Be accountable to the Head of Therapy Professions for the financial performance of the delegated service budget and take actions to limit spending when required.
* Identify cost pressures and development plans; ensure adherence to Trust Standing Financial Instructions; escalate issues as required.
* Participate in regular supervision, mandatory training, and annual development planning with the line manager; comply with Trust policies and equal opportunity commitments; maintain professional conduct and registration.
