Overview

Band 7 Children’s Occupational Therapist, Russet House Special Needs School

Hrs: Part time, 15hrs/week. Contract: Permanent

This is an OT post based at Russet House Special School, a primary school for autistic children aged 3 to 11 with Special Educational Needs. The role includes staff/parent training, class-based provision, and specialist individual work, with OT support to Russet House School families during school holidays. The post is within the Russet House school OT team, providing Occupational Therapy services for pupils both at home and school.


Responsibilities

* Provide high quality child-centred, occupationally focused assessment and intervention to Russet House pupils and their families.
* Develop and deliver a high quality, evidence-based OT service into Russet House school, including Universal, Targeted, and Specialist provision; staff training and class-based targeted interventions; and Specialist support.
* Work as an autonomous practitioner with access to supervision.
* Supervise, appraise and train pupils and junior staff as required.
* Collaborate within an interdisciplinary framework with teachers, community providers, social workers, SLT, psychologists, dietitians, paediatricians, physiotherapists, and other professionals.
* Manage, plan, co-ordinate, deliver and evaluate the Children’s Occupational Therapy Service, contributing to service improvements and quality initiatives.
* Develop occupationally focused intervention goals with children, parents/carers, and schools; ensure goals are child-centred and agreed with relevant stakeholders.
* Provide home and school-based OT input to prepare pupils for adulthood and support participation in self-care, school, and play/leisure.
* Develop and maintain high standards of clinical practice with outcome measures to monitor progress.
* Deliver class-based targeted intervention packages in collaboration with teaching staff; apply an occupational frame of reference and analyse child–environment–activity interactions to facilitate participation.
* Devise and manage specialised treatment plans, including school equipment provision, parental/school training, and ongoing management programs.
* Build productive relationships with parents/carers who may be under stress; advise and train parents, carers, and school staff on ongoing OT management programs.
* Develop integrated support plans with schools, multidisciplinary teams, and external agencies for effective child management and outcomes within inclusive facilities.
* Provide clinical support to junior staff and maintain compliance with standards of the Children’s Occupational Therapy Service, the Trust, BAOT, HCPC; apply National Guidelines and Legislation relevant to Health, Education and Social Care in OT practice.
* Move and handle children in school environments and manage clinical risk, including manual handling risk assessments and Trust lone-working policy compliance.
* Remain flexible to the demands of the service, including location, clinical specialty, deadlines, and interruptions; perform other duties as delegated by senior staff.

Allied Health Professions (AHPs) are a key workforce within the Trust and include dietitians, physiotherapists, podiatrists, occupational therapists, and other professions. AHPs work autonomously, lead teams, and contribute to patient journeys across health and social care sectors.


Qualifications and Skills

* Registered Occupational Therapist (HCPC) with eligibility to practice.
* Experience in paediatrics and autism, with ability to work across Universal, Targeted, and Specialist service levels.
* Experience supervising and training staff and working within multidisciplinary teams.
* Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate occupational therapy interventions; strong communication and relationship-building skills with children, families, and school staff.
* Knowledge of risk management, manual handling, and occupational therapy standards and guidelines.
