How you’ll play your part
In this role, you will make robust credit decisions for retail lending up to a personal CAL limit of £,, and be instrumental in maintaining our high standards of risk management and compliance within the UK's enhanced FCA regulatory framework.
Main Accountabilities
Credit Decision Making:
1. Evaluate and underwrite complex credit applications for private individuals and businesses seeking vehicle finance via the Mercedes-Benz Car and Van network, making informed lending decisions up to a personal mandate limit of £,.
2. Conduct thorough analysis of credit reports, financial statements and other relevant documentation to assess creditworthiness and affordability to identify potential risks.
3. Ensure all lending decisions align with the company's credit policy, risk appetite, and regulatory requirements such as those set by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), including CONC, Vulnerable Customers and AML risks.
4. Review and verify all financial documents for accuracy and completeness, mitigating potential fraud.
Training and Development:
5. Provide training and ongoing coaching to junior underwriters on the fundamentals of credit underwriting, risk assessment, and decision-making processes.
6. Identify skill gaps within the underwriting team and develop targeted training programs and materials to enhance their capabilities and ensure consistent application of underwriting standards.
7. Act as a subject matter expert, offering guidance and support on complex cases and policy interpretation.
Network Communication & Relationship Management:
8. Communicate credit decisions clearly and effectively to the dealer network, providing constructive feedback and rationale for approvals, declines, or modified terms.
9. Build and maintain strong working relationships with dealer network staff, ensuring a smooth and efficient application process while upholding service level agreements.
10. Plan, deliver or support network training sessions on the role of Retail Credit, to be held at Tongwell or at dealer locations as required. To offer guidance on best practice procedures to improve understanding and relationships.
Compliance & Risk Management:
11. Keep informed of changes in UK financial regulations, particularly those from the FCA, and ensure all underwriting practices remain compliant.
12. Contribute to the continuous improvement of underwriting policies and procedures to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and compliance.
13. Ensure all mandatory and role related training assessments are completed within the appropriate time to remain compliant.
Operational Excellence:
14. Manage a pipeline of applications efficiently, ensuring timely processing and decision-making to meet business objectives whilst ensuring good outcomes for customers.
15. Collaborate with other internal departments, such as Sales, Operations, and Collections, to ensure a seamless customer journey.
16. Assist in the testing and rollout of new or enhanced systems.
About you
17. Proven experience, minimum 3+ years in credit underwriting, preferably within the auto finance sector.
18. Strong understanding of FCA regulations and compliance requirements.
19. Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
20. Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
21. Ability to identify training needs and develop appropriate programs.
22. Proficiency in relevant software and tools.
