About the Role
We are looking for a highly motivated and proactive Transport First Line Manager (FLM) to join our transport operation on a permanent night shift basis. This is a key leadership role responsible for the safe, legal, and efficient execution of transport operations while leading and supporting a team of drivers to achieve operational excellence.
You will play a vital role in ensuring service delivery, compliance, driver engagement, and performance management, while maintaining a strong focus on customer satisfaction and operational KPIs.
Key Responsibilities
Transport Operations
Lead and manage drivers during the night shift, ensuring operational plans are delivered safely and efficiently.
Review and amend daily transport plans where required.
Monitor network SLAs and KPIs, taking action to address performance issues.
Manage operational issues and provide timely resolutions for transport and warehouse-related challenges.
Coordinate driver absence management and resource allocation.
Conduct driver briefings and debriefings for employed, agency, and subcontractor drivers.
Ensure all drivers are appropriately trained, qualified, and familiar with operational procedures and equipment.
Complete and monitor pre-shift vehicle and driver compliance checks.
Manage fleet compliance and ensure adherence to transport legislation and company standards.
Handle accident and breakdown management in line with company procedures.
Act as the primary point of contact for drivers throughout the shift.
Prepare and conduct regular driver performance reviews and 1-2-1 meetings.People Management
Lead, motivate, and develop a team of drivers to achieve high levels of engagement and performance.
Manage attendance, conduct, disciplinary, and grievance matters in line with company policies.
Promote a positive culture focused on safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Support recruitment, onboarding, training, and development activities.
Build strong working relationships with agency providers and subcontractors.Finance & Continuous Improvement
Monitor operational costs and identify opportunities to improve efficiency.
Analyse performance trends including fuel usage, accidents, and service levels.
Support transport projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
Contribute to operational change programmes as required.What We're Looking For
Essential Experience & Skills
Previous experience within a transport, logistics, or distribution environment.
Supervisory or team leadership experience.
Strong understanding of transport compliance and legal requirements.
Excellent communication and people management skills.
Ability to make decisions and solve problems in a fast-paced operational environment.
Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
Strong organisational and planning abilities.
Commercial awareness and understanding of operational KPIs.
Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple priorities.Essential Qualifications
Management Experience
Full understanding of Health & Safety requirements within a transport environment.Desirable
Previous transport office experience.
Experience managing agency and subcontractor drivers.
Good standard of secondary education.
