Genetic Counsellor – Prenatal & Cancer Genetics
Location: Remote
Commitment: 3-6 hours a week
About London Pregnancy Clinic:
London Pregnancy Clinic is a leading private provider of reproductive and prenatal services, offering state-of-the-art diagnostics alongside compassionate, patient-centred care. We pride ourselves on delivering evidence-based genetic counselling in a warm, supportive environment.
Role Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Genetic Counsellor specialising in prenatal and cancer genetics to join our multidisciplinary team for one clinic session per week. You will provide expert risk assessment, education, and psychosocial support to individuals and couples, both face-to-face and via remote consultations.
Key Responsibilities:
* Risk Assessment & Counselling: Take detailed personal and family histories to assess inherited cancer and fetal genetic risk. Communicate complex genetic information—risks, benefits, and limitations of testing—in clear, compassionate terms.
* Test Coordination & Interpretation: Recommend appropriate prenatal and cancer genetic tests (e.g., NIPT, carrier screens, BRCA panels). Interpret laboratory results and prepare written reports with management recommendations.
* Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work alongside obstetricians, sonographers, oncologists, and specialist nurses to formulate care plans. Refer patients appropriately for further imaging, specialist review, or psychosocial support.
* Patient Education & Resources: Develop and update patient information leaflets and digital content on genetic testing pathways. Lead group education sessions and contribute to webinars or workshops.
* Governance & Quality: Maintain accurate, timely records in line with GDPR and GMC guidelines. Participate in audit, service-evaluation projects, and continuing-professional-development activities.
Person Specification:
* Qualifications & Registration: Accredited HCPC Genetic Counsellor (or equivalent). MSc in Genetic Counselling, Clinical Genetics, or related discipline.
* Experience: Minimum 2 years’ post-qualification experience in prenatal and cancer genetics. Proven ability to counsel high-risk obstetric and oncology patients. Understanding of extended NIPT panels. Experience with counselling fertility patients on carrier screening. Cancer genetics experience.
* Skills & Attributes: Exceptional verbal and written communication, with strong listening and empathy skills. Ability to explain complex genomic concepts in lay terms. Highly organised, with meticulous attention to clinical governance and documentation. Collaborative approach within a small, agile team.
Terms & Benefits:
* Sessional Fee: Competitive, dependent on experience.
* Support: Dedicated clinic coordinator, admin, and sonography teams.
* Development: Access to external training, MDT meetings, and journal clubs.
* Facilities: Modern consulting rooms with integrated ultrasound and genetic reporting software.
