Job overview
PLEASE NOTE THAT WE WILL ONLY ACCEPT APPLICATIONS FROM STAFF CURRENTLY EMPLOYED BY SWANSEA BAY UNIVERSITY HEALTH BOARD
This is for a 18 month secondment opportunity. Candidates will be expected to provide written confirmation of support from their current employer should they be invited for interview
ACCTS is a road-based service deploying with dedicated critical care transfer vehicles and equipment, with a team consisting of a
clinical lead drawn from a pool of senior clinical fellows, senior trainees and consultants from an anaesthetics and/or intensive care
medicine background, alongside a retrieval and transfer practitioner (RTP) and a critical care transfer assistant providing emergency
driving and clinical support.
Since establishment in August 2021, ACCTS has undertaken the majority of inter-hospital critical care transfers for uplift of care,
repatriation and strategic management of network capacity, and has worked in partnership with the Emergency Medical Retrieval and
Transfer Service (EMRTS) Cymru in facilitating time critical transfers. Early indications are of a workload around 150% of
commissioning presumptions based on pre-COVID data. It is anticipated that the number of transfers will continue to increase over the
coming years as various regional networks become established and mature, as well as an increasing demand for critical care services
more generally.
This position combines a role within a patient-facing clinical transfer team, with some time spent working independently and remote
from the clinical team in triaging, co-ordinating and scheduling transfer requests.
Main duties of the job
Working as part of the clinical team, the Retrieval and Transfer Practitioner (RTP) will provide support, care and necessary clinical
interventions to patients in both the hospital and transfer environment, using appropriate skills and equipment safely and within
appropriate level of training, competency and scope of practice.
RTPs are registered practitioners who have undergone additional post registration education and clinical development to assess
and manage critically ill patients with specific or specialised care needs throughout the transfer and retrieval phase of their care.
The RTP has an enhanced level of relevant knowledge and skills in order to support the assessment, care and management of
critically ill or unwell patients. The RTP has extensive experience of assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating
individualised person-centred care for adult patients in the critical care unit setting.
Successful candidates will be deployed within this role as part of a multidisciplinary team configuration: predominantly by road, but
also on occasion by air. Therefore, the role requires the practitioner to be able to operate comfortably and effectively in these
environments and undergo further training applicable to these aspects of the role.
