The Office for Investment (OfI) was spun out of Downing Street in January 2021 and is now a joint unit between No.10, HM Treasury and the Department for Business and Trade (DBT).
OfI's vision and mission is to secure investment to drive growth, job creation and increased productivity across the UK. This is a wide-ranging role where you will get to develop new skills and build on existing ones to increase investment opportunities and shape the wider Government policies investors will operate under.
You will have a unique opportunity to engage directly with varied stakeholders across all levels of seniority, including established and new businesses, investors, colleagues overseas, sector specialists, DBT and OfI Senior Leadership, and Ministers.
You will be responsible for driving investment into the UK in your sectors of responsibility and leading a delivery team. There are 6 positions available and successful candidates will be appointed into roles leading on the following sectors: Creative & Consumer; Digital and Tech; Clean Energy; Financial & Professional Services; Advanced Manufacturing; Life Sciences.
* Senior Responsible Owner for investment in your sector(s) of responsibility.
* Develop a compelling vision, narrative, and roadmap for the activities of the team in your sector(s) of responsibility, to deliver strategically important and / or transformative investment to the UK, ensuring that internal and external stakeholders understand and can support the vision as necessary.
* Formulate (in conjunction with Deputy Director where necessary) appropriate performance metrics for Investment Delivery Managers and the organisation as a whole.
* Own the investment pipeline for your sectors of responsibility, with decision making power over which projects are provided with bespoke support from the Investment Delivery team and which are not.
* Provide leadership, motivation, and clear direction for the Investment Delivery team, leading on the performance management and ‘pastoral care’ of Investment Delivery Managers in your sector(s) of responsibility.
* Collaborate with Investment Partner and other colleagues to flex resource across teams, projects and opportunities as necessary, on an ad hoc, or long term basis.
* In conjunction with Business Group representatives and other appropriate stakeholders, identify priority sub-sectors and potential investors who represent high value and high impact opportunities for the UK (i.e. ‘hunt list’ companies) and devise appropriate targeting strategies. Lead on dialogue with such companies where appropriate.
* Perform SRO role on appropriate, strategically significant investment projects, engaging directly with investors and leading / playing a significant role in virtual teams as necessary.
* Identify areas in which supporting collateral / propositions are required for your sector(s) of responsibility and lead on the organisation of the production of necessary materials.
* Extensive engagement across internal stakeholders. Represent your sector(s) of responsibility effectively in internal discussions about strategy, deploying your expert knowledge of the opportunities and issues in the sector(s) to help inform decisions around strategy, resourcing, approaches, resolutions etc.
* Work closely with appropriate colleagues and stakeholders to identify and address barriers to investment, advocating for policy changes in your sector(s) of responsibility where appropriate, liaising across DBT and other Government departments where necessary.
* Track general sentiment from businesses in your sector(s) of responsibility in relation to the UK business environment, sharing intelligence as required with HMG stakeholders.
* Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with appropriate senior personnel across relevant departments / organisations, e.g. Business Group, other Government departments, Combined Authorities etc.
* Extensive engagement across external stakeholders. Represent ‘UK investment’ in your sector(s) of responsibility by engaging with appropriate stakeholders and speaking at relevant industry conferences and events to promote UK investment opportunities, in the UK and internationally.
* Lead on appropriate engagement with DBT Nations teams and National delivery partners in relation to issues across your sector(s) of responsibility.
* Lead on appropriate engagement with relevant local delivery partners in relation to the Key Account Management programme.
* Through your expertise and leadership, be seen around the network and beyond as the authoritative ‘go to’ person in the new OfI for questions relating to investment in your sector(s) of responsibility.
* Foster a collaborative, high-performing culture across the OfI through effective communication and leading by example.
* Contribute significantly to management group discussions about tactical and strategic issues and questions relating to the Investment Delivery team and the overall OfI.
* Manage and monitor personal and team budget spend around travel and subsistence, events, activities etc.
* Deliver options for ‘good news stories’ about your work and that of the team, for potential use in marketing scenarios.
* Be an exemplar in terms of data management, using appropriate CRM systems as a matter of course.
