Job summary

LOCUM CONSULTANT IN PAEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY (maternity cover)

John Radcliffe Hospital/Children's Hospital of Oxford is offering a whole‑time locum Consultant in Paediatric Oncology to cover 12 months of maternity leave. The post is for 10.0 programmed activities (PAs) and will work alongside the current permanent staff, three Paediatric Oncologists and three Paediatric Haematologists.

The position is open to individuals who are unable to work full‑time for personal reasons and to job‑share candidates, subject to a personal discussion with consultant colleagues.


Responsibilities

* Provide maternity cover from March 2026 for 12 months.
* Work with the Paediatric Haematology/Oncology team to deliver a regional service for children with cancer or haematological disorders.
* Deliver the 1 in 6 “consultant of the week” rota, covering inpatient activity and new referrals.
* Perform initial diagnostic work‑up, plan and deliver treatment and care for patients with solid and CNS tumours, leukaemia and lymphoma aged 0‑19 years.
* Attend and contribute to multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and review patients on the day unit.
* Support fellows and staff grades and independently lead outpatient clinics.
* Participate in annual and study leave arrangements to ensure an acceptable level of consultant cover.
* Co‑ordinate with the clinical director on the final Job plan and negotiate it annually.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Full GMC licence to practise.
* MRCPCH by examination or equivalent, or on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of CCT at interview.
* MBBS or equivalent.
* Appropriate training in a tertiary paediatric haematology/oncology centre; APLS or equivalent course and Level 3 safeguarding training.
* Applicants must be holders of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award, or demonstrate equivalence if non‑UK trained.
* Preferably CCT in Paediatrics.
* Higher degree (MSc, MD, PhD) or higher medical degree (FRCPath) is desirable.


Experience

* Minimum middle‑grade level up to consultant.
* Comprehensive training in paediatric oncology at tertiary level.
* Evidence of ability to make consultant‑level decisions and manage complex clinical problems.
* Valid APLS and NLS certifications and Level 3 Safeguarding Training.
* Wider experience, research, and training in a sub‑specialty service is desirable.


Skills

* Ability to work unsupervised and make decisions.
* Excellent communication skills, including delivering bad news.
* Time‑management and prioritisation.
* Compliance with GMC’s 'Good Medical Practice'.
* Participation in clinical audit/QI projects and evidence of critical appraisal of evidence.
* Willingness to train all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff.
* Knowledge of NHS management, clinical governance, service planning, and quality improvement.
* Proficient spoken and written English.
* Knowledge of risk management, annual job planning, and appraisal review processes is desirable.
* Experience in research or training the trainers is desirable.
