Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Occupational Therapy Team as a Band 4 Occupational Therapy Technician within the well-established Community Resource Teams. We are looking for a motivated,dynamic, confident person with experience of working in an NHS community setting. The Team focuses on supporting people to maintainindependence at home. The successful candidate will be based across two sites (Whitchurch andLlanrumney) and will also provide cover across the wider Cardiff area asrequired.


Main duties of the job

As an Occupational Therapy Technician within the Cardiff Community ResourceTeam, you will be working with the Occupational Therapists to implement and manage aspects of the Occupational Therapy treatment programme in consultation with Patients/families/Caregivers and other members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team. This will include working with people in their own home with the aim of restoring their functional ability, assessing for standard aids with guidance of the Occupational Therapist, carrying out routine administrative duties as per departmental policies and many other tasks including involvement in waiting list management and providing training.

The Team provide a seven-day service with a weekend and bank holiday rota in place, which the successful candidate will participate in. Sound IT skills will be required.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.


Job responsibilities

To assist and contribute to the therapeutic care delivery to patients in the Occupational Therapy service under the direction and supervision of a registered Occupational Therapist.

* To take responsibility for implementing and managing aspects of the Occupational Therapy treatment programme in consultation with service users and/or carers/key workers e.g. prepare and plan group and/or individual therapeutic activity.
* To use specialised technical/creative skills to manage and provide a flexible, client centredprogramme of therapeutic activities for individuals/groups of clients aimed at restoring functional ability in hospital and community settings, across specialities working and with other professional groups/agencies.
* To assess for standard aids with guidance of the Occupational Therapist.
* To work as part of the Occupational Therapy team.
* To promote independence, health and well-being and safety in hospital or community settings.
* To carry out routine administrative duties as per departmental policies.

Person Specification


Qualifications - Essential

* Good standard of basic education to include GCSE maths and English (A-C) or equivalent.
* NVQ/QCF level 4 or equivalent level of knowledge.
* NVQ/QCF level 3 e.g. AGORED diploma.
* Additional training to diploma level or equivalent, or equivalent via short course and experience and competencies achieved through accredited courses.


Qualifications - Desirable

* Health and Social care related qualification.


Experience - Essential

* Relevant experience of working in a rehabilitation/clinical setting.
* Organisation of delegated workload to support direct patient care.
* Inter-professional team working.
* Involvement with carers and families.


Experience - Desirable

* Experience of working across statutory and voluntary agencies.
* Previous experience of therapy assistant role.


Skills - Essential

* Acts in accordance with Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers in Wales.
* Basic IT skills.
* Able to use analytical skills and judgement.
* Excellent communication abilities and team work skills.
* Ability to work independently and to seek appropriate advice.
* Demonstrable skills in the facilitation and co facilitation of therapeutic group work.
* Enabling skills necessary to work with people with mental health problems.
* Ability to work flexibly in a range of settings including hospital and community.
* Ability to participate in the management of support staff and students.
* Ability to manage own time reflecting punctuality and consistent attendance.


Skills - Desirable

* Knowledge of spreadsheets and databases.
* Preparation and planning of own groups in line with the Occupational Therapy plan.


Special Knowledge - Essential

* Knowledge of Health & Safety at Work and related issues.
* Knowledge of teaching skills appropriate to adults, and knowledge of learning styles.
* Knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of the other professions in the multi-disciplinary and multi-agency team.
* Knowledge of the range of interventions appropriate in the treatment of people with hand injury and following surgery.
* Knowledge of the anatomy of the hand and upper limb.
* Experience of upper limb exercise programmes.


Special Knowledge - Desirable

* Knowledge of the application of Models of practice for Occupational Therapy.
* Knowledge of the procedures pertaining to the ordering, monitoring and control of stock equipment.
