Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist: Acute Knee Service
The successful applicant will provide an expert service as a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist in the diagnosis and management of patients referred to the Aneurin Bevan Health Board Trauma and Orthopaedic Knee Service.
Working in partnership with other specialties, GPs and members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT), the post holder will act as an expert resource in acute soft tissue knee conditions. Primarily based in orthopaedic clinics, responsibilities include diagnosing and managing patients with acute soft tissue knee conditions from referral sources such as GPs, Minor Injury Units and Physiotherapy services, supporting Welsh Government guidelines for treatment and outpatient pathways.
Main duties of the job
As a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist within Trauma and Orthopaedics, the post holder will ensure delivery of a high‑quality service to the local population.
* Handle a complex orthopaedic caseload, applying advanced clinical decision‑making skills in close collaboration with relevant consultants.
* Lead the development of postoperative follow‑up services for surgical patients, including the collection of appropriate PROMS.
* Investigate and analyse clinical and non‑clinical information to form accurate diagnoses, evaluations and prognoses as part of comprehensive assessments, recommending the best course of intervention for a wide range of highly complex conditions.
* Accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients and organise care effectively according to clinical priorities and time utilisation.
* Provide effective clinical leadership, ensuring that clinical supervision, training and ongoing development are delivered to MDT members and wider services such as physiotherapy, the Minor Injuries Unit and inpatient services where appropriate.
* Use verbal and non‑verbal communication tools effectively with patients to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes.
Person Specification
Qualifications and Knowledge
* Diploma or degree in Physiotherapy.
* HCPC Registration.
* Comprehensive post‑graduate training, including recognised/validated training in the appropriate specialty.
* Master’s qualification or equivalent demonstrable knowledge and experience.
* Evidence of a portfolio of relevant CPD, including formal attendance at specialist courses and informal training.
* Membership of appropriate special interest group(s).
* Ability to undertake joint and soft tissue injections with evidence of appropriate relevant training.
* Non‑medical prescriber registration.
Experience
* Extensive relevant clinical experience, including work as part of orthopaedic teams and wider MDT.
* Previous experience at Band 7 level.
* Demonstrable extensive experience in diagnosing, investigating and managing acute soft tissue injuries within orthopaedic and physiotherapy teams.
* Substantial experience as a physiotherapist managing a range of patients, including expert physiotherapy management of acute knee injuries.
* Experience of working collaboratively with Orthopaedics/AHPs to develop and evaluate clinical pathways.
* Excellent initiative, with the ability to take responsibility for own practice and decisions.
* Experience of teaching, mentorship and clinical supervision, including formal teaching at post‑graduate level.
* Involvement in research, audit cycles, publication of research (including poster presentations) and national research trials.
