Specialist pharmacist, Barts Heart Centre, St Bartholomew's Hospital,

Band: 7

Hours: 37.5 a week

Fixed term 12 months

This is an exciting role supporting the development of a world class pharmacy service within the Barts Heart and Thorax Centre and across the cardiovascular CAG. This fixed term opportunity will support the provision of a 7-day clinical pharmacy service to several cardiac specialities, cardiology, cardiothoracic, GUCH, pre-admission clinics and primary care work.

You will encounter exciting opportunities for your personal development as our cardiac services merge into a single, world class integrated cardiovascular centre. You will have the opportunity to work closely with medical and nursing staff on a wide range of medicines management matters to optimise medicines use within the trust to patients with cardiovascular disease.

Interviews will take place 2 weeks after the job offer closes with candidates being notified 7


Main duties of the job

To support the lead pharmacist for cardiovascular services in providing responsible, safe and cost-effective prescribing within the networks to

The post also helps to deliver the broader Medicines Optimisation and Governance Strategy across the Trust. These outcomes will be achieved primarily through leadership of clinical staff, and the publication and implementation of guidelines and procedures to encourage best practice

Person Specification


Qualifications

* MPharm or equivalent
* Registered as a pharmacist with the GPhC
* Certificate in General Pharmacy Practice /equivalent qualification or able to demonstrate equivalent experience and knowledge
* Postgraduate Pharmacy Qualification or equivalent experience (minimum postgraduate diploma level)


Experience

* Experience working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide patient care
* Experience appraising staff and giving feedback
* Significant experience of working as a clinical pharmacy practitioner in an acute hospital NHS setting
* Experience of providing hospital- based clinical service within cardiac services at Band 7 level or equivalent
* Experience of successfully leading and implementing service improvement and change projects.
* Experience of leading and supervising research, quality improvement or audit projects
* Ability to undertake and facilitate quality improvement, reflective practice, teaching and CPD


Knowledge

* Sound knowledge of drugs and therapeutics in cardiology at Diploma level or equivalent
* Thorough understanding of clinical governance and clinical risk management
* Knowledge of the key literature
* Knowledge and awareness of current national standards, guidelines and service delivery issues relevant to cardiology
* Knowledge of Safe and Secure Handling of Medicines requirements
* Understanding of the importance of adherence to SOPs and legislation
* Knowledge of the law and relevant guidance relating to medicines, pharmacy, rationing decisions in the NHS, Payment by Results (PbR) and commissioning
* Knowledge of the medication issues at the interface of primary and secondary care


Skills

* Excellent interpersonal skills
* Able to accurately follow written procedures under pressure
* Demonstrates numeracy skills and ability to perform accurate, complex calculations
* Ability to plan, prioritise and organise self, and others
* Able to complete documentation accurately with attention to details.
* Effective problem-solving skills
* Excellent clinical and managerial critical appraisal skills enabling effective decision making relating to the adoption of new therapies
* IT literate; able to use Microsoft office with intermediate IT skills including, accurate data entry and use of specialist computer programmes
* Management of risk in the clinical use of medicines
* Demonstrates ability to deliver staff training
