Offer description

Proud to serve. Proud to keep justice going. Our Legal Officers play a critical role in helping deliver justice. If you're intent on serving the public by delivering excellent service, and are enthusiastic about working with the judiciary, then this role gives you the opportunity to play a pivotal role within HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS).

About us

As part of His Majesty's Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS), the Tribunals directorate is responsible for the effective administration of Tribunals in England and Wales, and non-devolved Tribunals in Scotland and Northern Ireland. We work with an independent judiciary across a wide range of jurisdictions to provide a fair, efficient, and effective justice system.

HMCTS is undertaking an ambitious reform programme aimed at modernising services, technology, and infrastructure to improve user experience and reduce costs, ensuring access to justice for all.

Your role

Working within a Courts & Tribunals Service Centre (CTSC) or Regional Hearing Centre (RHC), you will support tribunal case management, undertake complex case work, and make decisions under delegated judicial powers. You will liaise with stakeholders and HMCTS colleagues to ensure effective administration of justice.

You will assess incoming tribunal work, manage caseloads proactively, and develop interventions to resolve barriers to case progression, potentially providing cross-jurisdictional expertise.

Development

HMCTS offers opportunities for learning and development, including applying for the HMCTS legal apprenticeship scheme, which supports training to become fully qualified solicitors and offers career progression into roles such as legal adviser or legal team manager.

Key responsibilities include:

* Supporting effective case assessment and management
* Engaging with judiciary, legal professionals, and tribunal teams
* Ensuring case documentation and records are accurate and complete
* Making decisions on applications and managing tribunal proceedings
* Developing expertise across multiple tribunal jurisdictions
* Undertaking administrative tasks to support tribunal operations

Additional information

This role is primarily office-based, with potential for flexible working. Occasional travel to other courts may be required. The salary starts at £35,335, with additional benefits including pension contributions, training, flexible working options, and annual leave.

Applicants must have the legal qualifications or equivalent experience, and the role involves security checks and compliance with immigration requirements.
