Senior Control & Instrument Designer – Wood
Remarkable people, trusted by clients to design and advance the world. Wood is recruiting for a Senior Control & Instrument Designer to support high-profile projects within the UK. The Instrument Designer will join our Systems Integration team within our Digital Consulting business. The role offers hybrid working with Tuesday and Wednesday based out of Aberdeen, Glasgow or Staines. Occasional travel to client sites is expected. This position is a minimum 12-month duration. Applicants must be able to pass the BPSS security check.
Overview
We are seeking experienced Senior Control & Instrumentation (C&I) Designers to join our Systems Integration team, supporting a range of automation and controls projects. You will work closely with Instrument Design Engineers to deliver high-quality design and drafting work in line with project schedules, standards, and allocated man-hours.
Responsibilities
* Produce detailed instrumentation and control deliverables, including cable block diagrams, loop diagrams, termination drawings, equipment location layouts, and installation details.
* Solve complex technical challenges, perform site surveys, and work independently across multiple project aspects.
* Ensure compliance with client specifications and engineering standards.
* Collaborate with Senior EC&I Engineers / PEMs to produce conceptual designs, design schemes and detail drawings and associated documentation.
* Maintain compliance with Engineering Standards and applicable legislation.
* Participate in Design Reviews to ensure drawings and designs are captured and updated.
* Ensure confidentiality and security of data and information received from clients.
* Liaise with Senior EC&I Engineers to ensure effective project delivery on time.
* Read and understand P&ID’s, Loop drawings, ISOs, wiring and hook-up diagrams; interpret engineering mark-ups and apply client engineering standards in day-to-day tasks.
* Demonstrate proficiency in CAD (AutoCAD) and Document Management Systems; understand ISA standards and symbology.
* Identify field instruments, mechanical equipment and piping components; perform site visits when required.

Qualifications and Skills
* Educated to HNC/HND or degree in a relevant engineering discipline; Chartered engineer or member of a relevant institute is a plus.
* Experience with P&ID, Loop drawings, and ISOs drafting.
* Proficiency in Autodesk AutoCAD and MS Office products.
* Understanding of Fibre Optic systems, CIMAGE & 4G; knowledge of Fire & Gas design and Instrument Earthing requirements.
* Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills at all levels.
* Basic knowledge of Plant Operations and maintenance.
* Ability to interpret engineering mark-ups and perform drawing corrections; field awareness of instruments and equipment.
* Capable of field as-built P&IDs, Loop drawings, ISOs, wiring diagrams; able to perform site visits when required.
Desirable
* Experience with SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI).
