Portfolio Underwriter - West Midlands
£60,000 - £70,000 | Hybrid | MGA Environment
Ready to drive portfolio performance and shape underwriting strategy at a thriving MGA?
My client is a Chartered MGA with over 25 years of consistent growth, looking for an experienced Portfolio Underwriter to take ownership of product portfolio performance and profitability.
The Opportunity
This isn't a traditional underwriting role - you'll combine technical expertise with strategic portfolio management, using data-driven insights to drive profitable growth across SME commercial lines.
You'll be accountable for portfolio performance, setting underwriting strategies, analyzing MI to identify trends and opportunities, and influencing senior stakeholders with evidence-based recommendations. Your work will directly shape our risk appetite, product development, and regional underwriting approach.
What you'll do:
* Own performance and profitability of assigned product portfolios
* Analyze MI and market data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities
* Develop and implement portfolio strategies, underwriting rules, and pricing approaches
* Lead deep-dive analysis on conversion, retention, claims, and customer behavior
* Collaborate with insurers and internal teams to optimize rating and competitiveness
* Drive strategic projects focused on commercial growth and product evolution
* Produce actionable insights that influence business direction
What you need to have:
* Proven track record managing portfolio risk selection and underwriting performance
* Strong technical skills in commercial SME property/liability underwriting
* Data-driven approach - ability to interpret MI and translate it into strategic decisions
* Portfolio management experience - MI analysis, underwriting rules, product development (ideally in MGA, insurer, or delegated authority environments)
* Strategic mindset - can challenge the status quo and propose practical solutions
* Excellent communication - influence stakeholders at all levels with clear, evidence-based insights
Desirable:
* ACII/DIP CII qualification or working towards it
