About the role

The Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trust has an exciting opportunity for a MRI Clinical Manager to fulfil a key role within our busy MRI department. This role requires excellent organisational and interpersonal skills, with a focus on continuous self-improvement and helping others.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate evidence of good MRI radiographic experience. You will have good team membership skills and the ability to act diplomatically in sensitive situations involving patients or staff.

We require someone who can step into this role with confidence, professionalism and the ability to motivate themselves and others. We are looking for someone who can uphold our trust values & behaviours and play a crucial role in delivering excellent care. Are you caring, ensuring this is in the heart of all you do? Are you willing to contribute to help improve aspects of the care being delivered and to improve yourself? Are you respectful of others and treat people the way they would expect to be treated? Are you able to provide a high standard of work, for both patients and the services we provide? Then you just might be the candidate we are looking for.

There is a need to be punctual and to demonstrate outstanding time management skills.

We are a multi-site trust and as part of your role you will be required to work across any site (including Pinderfields, Pontefract, Dewsbury and Wakefield CDC) within the Trust. We offer a regular staff shuttle service between all 3 sites for staff convenience and ease.

The Trust has recently built a new unit, specifically for the MRI department, housing a new 3T scanner to compliment our Siemens Aera and three Philips Ambition scanners all equipped with Smartspeed AI.

The Mid Yorkshire Trust has excellent travel links to Leeds, Sheffield, Doncaster and Bradford. We are close to both the M1 and the M62.

Informal visits are strongly encouraged please contact; Jenna Small, Patient Service Manager on 01924 546182 or jenna.small@nhs.net

Main duties

Key Responsibilities

* Communication is required with a variety of groups and individuals both internal and external to the organisation. Information to be communicated is usually sensitive, complex and occasionally contentious in nature and should be delivered in a manner appropriate and sensitive to the recipient’s needs. Communication should at all times be professional and use of a variety of media may be required, presentation to groups will be essential. Motivational, supportive and/or directive communication strategies will be required.
* To function as an autonomous practitioner taking responsibility and accountability for effective care delivery.

This aspect of the role involves moving and handling and positioning patients (including those on chairs trolleys, beds and the detachable scan table), insertion of canulae, injection of IV contrast manually or via a programmable injection pump and performing ECG gated examinations. This also requires frequent moving and handling of receive and transmit coils between the scan table and the coil storage cabinet. Depending on the size of the coil and age of the particular scanner, some are heavy.

MRI scanning requires accurate positioning and careful manipulation of a number of values to ensure scans are performed safely and produce optimal diagnostic images. The work requires concentration. Because of the higher magnetic field associated with 3T scanner operation of this scanner is more complex as it increase the risk of patient burns if not operated correctly. The scanner bore is a confined area meaning patients can become anxious due to claustrophobia. Each week a number of patients will be distressed or emotional because of this issue. Some will refuse the scan, others can be convinced to persist with the scan following careful handling of their issues by the Radiographer performing the scan.

There is a trap hazard between the size of the bore and the scan table when moving the patient. There is also the risk of patient burns due to the heating effect of the magnetic field on some materials and, in the case of the 3T, skin to skin contact. Therefore, the post holder will need to monitor the patient closely whilst scanning to minimise anxiety and avoid potential injury.

The cohort of patients scanned means a significant number will be undergoing a scan for suspected cancer or will have a cancer diagnosis.

* To act as an expert practitioner demonstrating advanced clinical competencies and a knowledge base beyond those associated with specialist radiographic roles. MRI is a complex modality that utilises advanced and costly medical equipment on multiple sites on a daily basis. As an expert practitioner, the post holder will need to possess a higher level of understanding in an already complex modality, and be able to consistently demonstrate and transfer these skills to the wider clinical team.
* To lead in the establishment of standards and guidelines for best practice. This will be achieved by a review of work processes, which will impact on service delivery to patients. Changes in practice are also likely to impact upon other areas on the organisation such as referrers or locations such as wards. National guidance regarding non-medical referrers (eg PAs) is still under development but, will inevitably have an impact on MRI referral policy once the position becomes clear. As a potentially contentious area, this will need delicate handling.
* To have joint management responsibility for the MRI Team Leaders with the Patient Service Manager MRI.
* To discuss own practice with peers and work effectively as part of the evolving radiology team.
* To have a good working knowledge of Radiology clinical information systems (RIS & PACS). This will require working with the Yorkshire Imaging Collaborative and MYTT Future Imaging Platform Program (FIPP) team to ensure any system intended to replace the current systems delivers all that is required to support the MRI (eg image reformatting, dynamic curve creation etc).
* To have a working knowledge of other computerised systems within the trust required to undertake this role
* To take a lead on MRI safety for the Radiology department, in conjunction with the Trust external MRI safety expert. MRI safety is a complex issue. Many implantable devices (eg pacemakers, defibrillators, neuromuscular stimulators, drug delivery pumps) can be damaged or dislodged by the magnetic fields associated with MRI. These have to be managed carefully in coordination with the MYTT cardiology team or the companies who provided the implanted device. Baclofen delivery pumps also need coordination with the spinal injuries unit. The new 3T scanner produces a significantly greater magnetic field with heightened safety implications.
* To take a lead role in all elements of clinical governance in MRI.
