Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Physiotherapist to work in the Trauma Orthopaedic team at The Royal Albert and Edward Infirmary at Wigan Hospital.

The post is for 37.5 hours per week over a 7 day period.

You will have the chance to work with surgeons and specialist therapists who are experts in their field and this gives rise to excellent learning opportunities.

The role will require you to work across all areas in the Trust which includes those that are designated as positive, asymptomatic and negative COVID wards.

Candidates are required to present original certificates for qualifications at interview stage.


Main duties of the job

The main duties of the job include:

* The physiotherapy assessment and treatment of a wide range of post-operative trauma and elective orthopaedic conditions.
* Opportunities for audit and research.
* Opportunities to watch ground-breaking operations to enhance clinical knowledge.
* To work closely with senior colleagues to develop and enhance current service provision.
* To plan for and treat patients with complex needs who require orthopaedic surgery.

The role also involves the development of other staff in the team and wider MDT, teaching students, supervising junior and unqualified staff.

On-Call

Please note that senior positions (AFC band 8A or above) may be expected to participate in an on-call rota, if the role is predominantly operational.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* To provide a high standard of physiotherapy service to patients with orthopaedic conditions on the wards and in the Therapy department.
* To act as a static Band 6 in the inpatient trauma and orthopaedic team at Wigan Hospital.
* To act as a source of knowledge on the management of patients presenting with a wide range of orthopaedic conditions and provide an advisory/educational service to patients, relatives, physiotherapists and other healthcare professionals.
* To take a role in the specialist assessment and treatment of patients within the orthopaedic specialty who may have complex and or chronic presentation, and to determine clinical diagnosis and physiotherapy treatment indicated.
* To hold responsibility for own case load and be responsible for a defined area of the service or a particular patient type. Supervision takes the form of regular formal training and clinical reasoning sessions, peer review, case conferences. Access to advice and support from a senior physiotherapist is available if required, clinical work is routinely evaluated.
* To work jointly with staff from social services, hospital trusts, primary care trusts, education, etc., in providing rehabilitation and coordinating discharge.
* To educate and train physiotherapists, other health professionals and physiotherapy students in the management of orthopaedic conditions.


Person specification


Qualifications

* Qualified HCPC Practitioner
* Diploma/Degree in Physiotherapy


Desirable criteria

* Relevant clinical courses
* Clinical Educators course
* Member of relevant special interest group


Experience

* Experience at Band 5 level or above in relevant areas of practice


Desirable criteria

* Band 5 level experience in a variety of specialities in a range of settings


Skills

* Excellent inter-personal skills
* Self-directed learning
* Ability to work independently
* Ability to pass on skills/knowledge to others within both formal and informal environments
* Ability to work collaboratively within the multi-disciplinary team
* Able to maintain judgement under pressure


Desirable criteria

* Presentation skills
* IT skills


Knowledge

* Knowledge of a range of approaches to the physiotherapy management of a variety of musculoskeletal disorders.
* Evidence of self-directed learning.


Additional

* Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, i.e. with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation.
* Ability to travel freely around the Trust area.
* Flexible to work patterns.
* To be able to participate in weekend working as required.
