Overview

The Ministry of Defence employs over 50,000 Civil Servants. Within that, with responsibility for an annual budget of over £10bn, the Army is a major part of the Ministry of Defence and one of its largest operating centres who employ around 12,000 Civil Servants located at over 300 locations supporting the 110K regular and reserve soldiers across the Army. This Civil Service workforce is diverse, with many different functions and professions ranging from police officers, security guards, trainers, human resources, teachers, and psychologists to storekeepers, financiers, project and programme managers, and policy secretariat staff. The college is made up of 3 schools; Defence School of Logistics and Administration (DSLA) predominantly based at Worthy Down; Defence School of Policing and Guarding (DSPG) in Southwick Park; and Defence School of Transport (DST) at Leconfield. The college headquarters is also based at Worthy Down - a newly built, modern campus in Hampshire. The Defence School of Logistics and Administration (DSLA), one of three schools in the Defence College of Support (DCSp) delivers training to all Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force service personnel in Supply, Distribution, Catering, and Personnel Administration. This role sits within the Catering Training Wing (CTW) of DSLA, providing initial and continuation training for all our military personnel. CTW is seeking a Senior Instructor to support the Head of the Food Safety team within Catering Support. You will be responsible for administrating and delivering training in Food Safety and Health and Safety up to Level 3, and for ensuring compliance with Food Safety standards across the Wing. Your outputs will ensure that Defence Catering and military personnel are fully prepared for their future roles and that CTW maintains its standards as a Centre of Catering Excellence. The position is advertised at 37 hours per week, and attendance to the stated site will be required.

This role is within Catering Training Wing (CTW) at MOD Worthy Down and offers an exciting opportunity to work in a front-facing military training environment. You will drive the Culinary Courses at CTW - Defence's Centre of Catering Excellence - by managing the Food Safety training of military catering personnel up to Level 3 standard, you will also have a supporting role in reporting of Health and Safety issues and process, while also developing and optimising courses to make sure they remain relevant in an ever-changing environment.


Responsibilities

* Responsible for the Food Safety culture of CTW, planning, influencing, and organising Food Safety matters to ensure the Wing maintains its high standards.
* Collaborate with senior managers, using your expertise to aid their decision making and management of the Catering Training Wing through the provision of strategic oversight and guidance.
* Deliver Food Safety training up to Level 3 standard.
* Deliver Health and Safety training up to Level 2 standard.
* Liaise with Safety training awarding bodies on behalf of CTW.
* Undertake reporting and or hastening of equipment and infrastructure defects and requirements within CTW, particularly where these are Safety related, in collaboration with the military team.
* Provide expert Food Safety advice and guidance to CTW to enable effective management of risks and compliance with legal responsibilities.
* Undertake planning and administration in respect of externally accredited training including Food Safety and Health and Safety.
* Deputise as required.


Qualifications and experience

* Teaching and Instructional experience and qualifications are required, a Cert Ed or equivalent, with approval from an awarding body as a tutor preferred. Qualifications could be CIEH Professional Trainer Certificate, or Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET), or similar.
* Catering experience at a managerial level with a proven track record of delivering training programmes to various levels of ability from apprentices at Level 2 to junior leaders at Level 3.
* Managing Food Safety Award Level 3 or equivalent qualification.
* Catering experience at a minimum of supervisory level for a minimum of 5 years.
* Catering experience as a food handler as a chef or in front of house.
* Currency with food standards and food compliance legislation and policy.
* Health and Safety experience of reporting defects and managing processes.
* Experience leading people to deliver outputs.
* Forward thinking, have an eye for detail and able to take the initiative by working proactively to complete tasks.
* Effective communication skills and ability to manage sensitive subjects and demands as you will be working with a variety of ranks of Service Personnel (SP) and coordination with multiple agencies.
* Experience briefing managers and contributing to management discussions.
* An ability to plan and administrate activity and to deliver to deadlines.
* An outstanding team member, able to contribute beyond core role in support of School vision.
* Effective written and oral communication skills able to inform and influence.
* Good IT skills including familiarity with Office 365 including use of MS Teams.
* An eye for detail with the ability to analyse information and drive continuous improvement and change.
* An ability to design and deliver programmes that align with the school's ethos, as well as meeting the training requirements.


Desirable

* Catering experience at managerial level.
* Health & Safety within the workplace qualification.
* Chef experience to at least Supervisory level.
* Managing Food Safety Award Level 3 or equivalent qualification.
* Teaching qualification required, a Cert Ed or equivalent, with approval from an awarding body as a tutor preferred. Qualifications could be CIEH Professional Trainer Certificate, or Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET), or similar.

The post does not offer relocation expenses.

External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period. Expenses incurred for travel to interviews will not be reimbursed.
