Respiratory Highly Specialist Pharmacist

Location: Bristol, England, United Kingdom


Job Overview

We are seeking a dynamic and motivated prescribing pharmacist to join our respiratory pharmacy team for 12 months to cover maternity leave. You will work with a team of pharmacists and technicians to provide specialist pharmaceutical care. You will review patients and prescribe in outpatient clinics for interstitial lung disease and/or severe asthma, as well as inpatient review of complex patients. The post holder will work across boundaries to contribute to the development of respiratory services within the BNSSG locality, demonstrating a whole‑system patient‑focused approach.


Main Responsibilities

* Work closely with the Respiratory team to develop and deliver tertiary services in accordance with trust policies, procedures and national legislation.
* Act as a highly specialist practitioner delivering the clinical pharmacy aspects of respiratory medicine.
* Represent specialist pharmaceutical interests in multidisciplinary meetings within the Trust and the wider local healthcare economy, sharing knowledge and experience with other respiratory pharmacists.
* Lead line management of respiratory pharmacy team members.
* Provide pharmaceutical expertise during multidisciplinary ward rounds, team meetings and any working groups concerning respiratory protocols, policies and guidelines.
* Deliver clinical pharmacy services, including respiratory ward cover, screening and weekend work.
* Advise on cost‑effective use of respiratory medicines and produce reports on usage and cost for the medicine divisions.
* Support the NICE/Pharmacoeconomics pharmacy team with horizon scanning and high‑cost drug commissioning.
* Collaborate with the Lead Respiratory Pharmacist on the introduction of novel respiratory treatments.
* Contribute to the training of pharmacy undergraduates, medical students, pre‑registration pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and other staff groups.
* Participate in cross‑sector projects with the lead principal medicines optimisation pharmacist, respiratory pharmacist and clinicians.
* Provide cross‑cover for non‑prescribing elements of the interstitial lung disease or severe asthma service as required.
* Participate in the pharmacy weekend, bank holiday and late duty service.


Person Specification


Work Experience

Essential criteria

* UK hospital experience (AfC 7)
* Clinical pharmacy experience managing patients with respiratory conditions in secondary care.
* Experience of teaching or supporting learning (e.g., mentoring, marking).
* Experience of audit and quality systems.


Education / Training / Qualifications

Essential criteria

* UK registered pharmacist.
* Clinical diploma or other recognised postgraduate qualification.
* Evidence of CPD.
* Qualified independent prescriber.

Desirable criteria

* Leadership qualification.


Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Essential criteria

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Ability to manage time and prioritise effectively.
* Proactive application of specialist pharmaceutical knowledge to enhance patient care.
* Knowledge of respiratory medicines.
* Ability to develop knowledge in a specialised area.
* Relevant IT skills to ECDL level or equivalent.
* Ability to plan, manage, monitor and review therapeutic programmes for patients.
* Planning and delivery of education and training to a range of staff groups and patients/carers.
* Ability to review and process complex information, including reporting on drug expenditure and performance indicators.
* Evidence of leadership.

Desirable criteria

* Evidence of ability to publish (including posters).

* Experience of producing policies, procedures and guidelines.
