Overview
Job title: Highways Maintenance Operative/Bridge Operative
Job purpose: To assist the Road and Drainage Worker to carry out highway maintenance works in accordance with job tickets, target dates, appropriate Codes of Practice and local service levels, including the functional and inspection elements of the Gully Cleansing Schedule.
Responsibilities
* Highway Construction Duties to Include assisting a Road and Drainage Worker to lay and take up kerbing to line and level.
* Block paviours laid to required level and bonds.
* PCC paving slabs laid to required level, including raking out and re-pointing.
* Concrete laid to required level, including correct placement of reinforcement and shuttering.
* Drainage pipes laid to the required gradient and trench type.
* Granular material (as foundations for footway, carriageway or other structure) laid to the correct level and gradient by hand.
* Hot and cold bituminous materials laid in layers (in footway or carriageway) to the correct level and gradient by hand.
* Hot and cold bituminous materials used to effect both temporary and permanent repairs to footway and carriageway potholes.
* Assisting a Road and Drainage Worker to construct and remove concrete sectional or brickwork inspection chambers to correct level and location.
* Assisting with walls above and below ground in fair-faced blockwork or brickwork to correct level and bond.
* Assisting with random rubble or dressed ashlar masonry walling including raking out and repointing where needed.
Knowledge, Skills, Training And Experience
Can be illustrated by demonstrating an acceptable level in the following (or majority):
* No less than 3 passes at GCSE O level or BTEC equivalent and/or a minimum of 3 years experience in highway maintenance.
* Holds a HGV Class 2 or better.
* Proven record in delivering highway maintenance tasks as described in the job description.
* Knowledge and understanding of legislation and statutory obligations affecting the provision and delivery of highway maintenance.
