Islington Council has a number of exciting opportunities for qualified domestic gas engineers within its in-house repairs and maintenance service.
Main duties of the job
As well as completing annual landlord gas safety checks to approximately 10, properties in the north of the borough, the gas service is also responsible for completing responsive breakdown repairs and successful candidates will have an aptitude for both areas of work.
In order to deliver the highest levels of service the Council operates an out of hour’s Rota, which includes regular weekday evening and weekend shifts. Out of hours’ work is contractual and as such attracts an unsocial hour’s payment of 12% of gross salary in addition to the basic salary as indicated.
The Council is looking for enthusiastic, diligent and suitably qualified gas engineers to join our existing team. As this role will involve daily interaction with customers, we require individuals with excellent interpersonal skills who will strive to achieve the best outcome and service delivery for the residents of Islington.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This role attracts an additional 12% salary shift enhancement, of £4, - £4, per year.
To carry out a range of gas work on domestic systems and appliances within the Councils housing stock, as scheduled or directed by line managers/supervisors/dispatchers. The Domestic Gas Engineer will be responsible for ensuring all work is completed to a high standard, maintaining good first-time fix rates to ensure decent, suitable, and safe housing for Islington Council residents. Islington Council Domestic Gas Engineers will carry out routine landlord gas safety checks as well as fault diagnosis, repairs, and installation of parts in respect of both modern and traditional heating/hot water appliances, in accordance with legislative requirements, industry guidance/best practice and manufacturer’s instructions. The Domestic Gas Engineer will also undertake all functions associated with their role as part to of a contractual out of hour’s rota. Out of hours working will include regular weekday evenings, weekends, and public/bank holidays. These unsociable hours’ elements will attract enhanced rates of pay in addition to the basic salary in line with Islington Council policies.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
Essential criteria
1. E1 Considerable proven post qualification experience of servicing/repair and inspection of domestic gas appliances; and/or considerable proven experience of working within a 3-star Gas Maintenance Contract. Current Gas Safe registration.
2. E2 Qualifications: City & Guilds, NVQ Level 2 or equivalent and have ACS Qualifications CCN1, CEN1, HTR1, Wat1, CHR1, CPA1.
3. E3 Multi-skills training to a minimum of NVQ3 or a willingness to be trained when employed by LBI
4. E4 Detailed knowledge of gas ventilation, installation and repair of domestic gas systems and appliances
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITY
Essential criteria
5. E5 Detailed knowledge of health and safety legislation, codes of practice and British Standards in relation to gas safety
6. E6 Demonstrates a comprehensive awareness of good construction safety practices and the application of safe systems of work including asbestos awareness, working at heights (including safe use of ladders, step ladders and scaffolds)
7. E7 Demonstrates the ability to organise own workload, appropriately prioritising, ordering necessary materials and plant and working unsupervised for long periods of time, including outside of normal office hours where required.
8. E8 Logical and methodical approach to problem solving/fault diagnosis and demonstrates a suitable level of literacy and numeracy required to complete the various calculations, reports and data entry relating to gas work.
9. E9 Demonstrates the ability to verbally communicate with customers and colleagues, with the ability to answer customer queries clearly and concisely and maintaining constructive, effective working relationships with colleagues.
