Physician Associate (PA) In Acute Medicine

We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic PA to join our acute medicine team at Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend.
Our diverse multidisciplinary acute medicine team currently consists of nurses, advanced clinical practitioners, physician assistants, advanced nurse practitioners, junior doctors, pharmacy, therapies, clerical staff, managers and consultants. There is a dedicated Acute Medical Unit (AMU) for acute and general medical patients – with assessment areas and a short‑stay inpatient area. The team also runs the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Unit, which has outpatient and trolley‑based areas for assessment and treatment. In addition, the team works alongside other clinicians managing patients referred to and under medicine within the emergency department.
This post is fixed term/secondment for 12 months to cover maternity leave. If you are interested in applying for it as a secondment, please obtain permission from your current line manager prior to applying.
Main duties of the job
The Physician Associate (PA) will act within a predetermined level of supervision and within agreed national guidelines. They will have significant autonomy to act independently, with the supervising doctor available for consultation.
The PA will support the specialist trainees/clinical fellows/resident doctors/Advanced Nurse Practitioners/Advanced Clinical Practitioners in the delivery of high‑quality care to patients in acute medicine.
The PA will have been trained to exercise autonomy in medical decision‑making.
The post holder will be required to, within their scope of professional practice:
* Formulate a differential diagnosis based on history and physical examination.
* Develop and deliver appropriate treatment and management plans on behalf of the supervising physician.
* Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
* Request and interpret diagnostic studies.
The PA will be aware of the limits of their competence and committed to acting within these limits. They will be highly skilled at working in a multi‑professional team environment, and, as a lifelong learner, engage in active professional development. Although they may develop specialty expertise, PAs are expected to maintain their broad clinical knowledge base through continuing professional development (CPD) and will be required to sit for a national re‑certification exam every five years, as applicable.
Welsh Skills Desirable
This post is advertised as Welsh desirable. This does not mean essential; while the candidate does not need to have skills in Welsh, we’ll consider it an advantage when short‑listing and selecting candidates. This isn’t fluency, just speaking & listening skills at Level 3 (equivalent to CEFR B2) or above. Level 3 means basic conversations with patients about their everyday health. Person Specification
Qualifications
* Qualified Physician Associate (PA) with relevant postgraduate qualifications.
* Possess additional, transferable, highly specialist knowledge acquired through training or experience to Master’s Level equivalency.
* GMC registered.
* Evidence of CPD.
* Teaching/mentoring course.
* Currently working as a Physician Associate.
* ALS competent.
* Knowledge of patient planning and assessments.
Experience
* Experience in the acute care setting.
* Experience of managing staff and resources.
* Knowledge of audit.
* Previous role as a Physician Associate in medicine.
Aptitude and Abilities / Skills
* Skills for assessing and interpreting specialist acute patient conditions, taking appropriate action, recognising and managing emergency situations.
* All relevant clinical practical skills such as cannulation and venepuncture.
* Knowledge of prescribing.
* Welsh language skills in speaking/listening at Level 3 or above.
