Job Specification: Production Manager
Part of The Camel’s Back Ltd, Treleavens Luxury Cornish Ice Cream is an award-winning producer of premium ice creams and sorbets, located in North Cornwall. Using natural ingredients and fresh Cornish milk and cream from local farms, Treleavens offers a variety of flavours with a rich and creamy texture. The milk is sourced from farmers who prioritize the wellbeing of their cows, ensuring high-quality ingredients. With minimal air incorporated into the ice cream, the result is a dense, intensely flavoured product cherished by its customers.
Reports To: Managing Director
Salary: circa £40,000 per annum (dependent on experience)
Contract: Full-Time, Permanent
Hours of Work: 40 hours per week (flexibility required during seasonal peaks)
Job Purpose
The Production Manager is responsible for the effective planning, coordination, and control of all manufacturing processes within Treleavens Ice Cream. The postholder will ensure that products are produced safely, to specification, within budget, and in line with regulatory and company standards. The role includes leadership of the production team, oversight of compliance systems, and lead on new product development.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Production Operations
* Manage day-to-day production activities, ensuring efficient, timely, and cost-effective manufacturing of all ice cream products.
* Provide leadership, supervision, and performance management for a team of three production operatives.
* Plan and organise production schedules in line with customer demand and seasonal fluctuations.
* Recruit, train, and onboard production staff, including permanent and seasonal employees.
Quality, Compliance, and Standards
* Maintain and manage the company HACCP system and maintain SALSA accreditation, including documentation, updates, and internal inspections.
* Oversee labelling compliance, trading standards requirements, and production of accurate nutritional information.
* Lead preparations for external audits and support the company’s progress towards achieving BRC accreditation.
Stock and Resource Management
* Manage stock levels of raw materials, packaging, and finished goods to ensure continuous production.
* Liaise with suppliers regarding quality, supply continuity, and cost management.
* Oversee the maintenance and servicing of production machinery and equipment.
New Product Development
* Lead all New Product Development (NPD) activities, including product improvement and customer-driven innovation.
* Work collaboratively with suppliers and customers to develop and trial new concepts.
* Undertake occasional travel within the UK for customer meetings, supplier visits, or production trials (short-duration trips only).
Health and Safety
* Act as the Site Health and Safety Coordinator, ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation and company procedures.
* Conduct risk assessments and ensure corrective actions are implemented promptly.
* Promote a culture of safety awareness within the production team.
Person Specification
* Proven experience in a food production or manufacturing environment.
* Demonstrable leadership experience within a production setting.
* Strong understanding of HACCP principles and food safety standards.
* Excellent organisational, planning, and communication skills.
* Ability to work flexibly and respond effectively to seasonal production demands.
* Competence in managing compliance documentation and production records.
* Experience working towards BRC Global Standard or similar accreditation.
* Background in dairy, ice cream, chilled foods, or related food categories.
* Experience in New Product Development or product formulation.
* Competitive salary circa £40,000 (dependent on experience).
