About the Project
The Greater Manchester Travel Diary Survey (GMTRADS) is a long-running, large-scale household travel survey currently in its 15th year. The project gathers essential data about travel behaviour and household characteristics across all ten districts of Greater Manchester. Over 2,000 surveys are completed annually by our dedicated team of field interviewers.
We are looking to recruit reliable, professional, and motivated Field Interviewers to join this established and ongoing project.
The Role
This is a face-to-face, door-to-door interviewing role. Interviewers are allocated a number of monthly \"sample points,\" each consisting of 10 randomly selected addresses within a specific area.
Each address must be attempted at least four times within the allocated month to maximise response rates. Interviewing must be conducted across different days of the week, including some evenings and weekends, to meet project quotas.
This role is ideally suited to individuals living in or near Greater Manchester. Driving is essential, as interviewers must travel between addresses at various times throughout the week.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct face-to-face household interviews across Greater Manchester.
Make a minimum of four contact attempts per address within the allocated month.
Meet day-of-week interviewing quotas (including weekend work).
Accurately collect and record data using:
CAPI (Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing) via tablet
Paper-based travel diary forms
Maintain professionalism and high data quality standards.
Work independently to manage allocated workload within deadlines.
Survey Content
Each interview takes approximately 20 minutes on average and collects information about:
Household characteristics (completed via tablet using CAPI)
Characteristics of all residents aged 4+ (completed via tablet using CAPI)
All trips made by each resident within a 24-hour period (completed on paper)
Work Allocation
Minimum allocation: 2 sample points per month (20 addresses total).
Each sample point consists of 10 randomly selected addresses.
Interviewers may be allocated sample points across one or more districts.
Flexible scheduling, but must meet required visit attempts and quota timings.
Pay & Incentives
£75 per sample point
£17 per person interviewed (average household = 2 people)
Current average hit rate: approximately 45%
Average earnings per sample point: £151.50
(excluding mileage and other expenses, which are paid separately)
Monthly Bonus
£20 per sample point if day-of-week targets are achieved.
This is a performance-based role with strong earning potential for motivated interviewers.
Essential Requirements
Must live in or near Greater Manchester.
Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle (essential).
Confident approaching households and conducting face-to-face interviews.
Professional, polite, and resilient manner.
Strong organisational and time management skills.
Ability to work independently.
Comfortable using a tablet for data collection.
