Controls Engineer Water Industry

Location: Bath (with travel to local sites as required)
Salary: Up to £60,000 per annum (depending on experience)
Contract: Full-time, permanent


The Opportunity

An established engineering organisation based near Bath is seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to support the design, development, and delivery of automation and control systems within the water and wastewater sector.

This is a key role within a growing team, working on a range of projects from control panel design to site commissioning. Youll play a hands-on part in developing reliable, compliant, and efficient systems that support essential water treatment and distribution processes.


About the Role

As a Controls Engineer, youll take ownership of projects across the full lifecycle from initial design and PLC programming through to on-site testing and commissioning. Youll be involved in the integration of electrical, control, and automation systems across pumping stations, treatment plants, and related infrastructure.


Key Responsibilities
* Design, develop, and implement PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems for water and wastewater applications

* Produce control system documentation including I/O lists, functional design specs, and wiring diagrams

* Configure and program PLCs (e.g. Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi, or Schneider) and HMI interfaces

* Support FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) and SAT (Site Acceptance Testing) processes

* Carry out on-site commissioning and troubleshooting

* Collaborate with electrical and mechanical teams to ensure seamless system integration

* Ensure all work complies with industry standards, health & safety regulations, and water company specifications

* Provide technical support during project delivery and aftercare phases


About You
* Degree, HNC, or equivalent qualification in Electrical, Control, or Automation Engineering

* Proven experience as a Controls Engineer within the water or wastewater industry (essential)

* Hands-on experience with PLC and SCADA systems used by UK water authorities (e.g. Siemens, Rockwell, Wonderware, Schneider, or Mitsubishi)

* Strong understanding of process control, instrumentation, and telemetry systems

* Knowledge of control panel design and wiring standards

* Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP, etc.)

* Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organisational skills

* Willingness to travel to customer sites for commissioning and support
