Job Description
WSP’s Roads team in Bristol, composed of approximately 30 engineers, technicians and project management professionals, works on a wide range of rail and highways projects across the UK and beyond. Clients include HS2, Network Rail, National Highways, Welsh Government, D&B Contractors and private sector customers.
Role
You will be leading the day‑to‑day technical delivery of highway consultancy services to support our clients through all stages of the project life‑cycle – from feasibility and concept design to detailed design, construction and hand‑over. This is a client‑facing role with responsibilities that vary by grade.
* Managing projects to ensure coordination and compatibility of multi‑disciplinary inputs on projects of varying scale, complexity and value.
* Liaising with clients, developing strong trusted relationships, actively managing their expectations and providing comprehensive advice.
* Undertaking technical lead and reviewer roles on projects.
* Using technical ability and experience to support others and maximise their contribution to project and team goals.
* Preparing fee proposals and managing budgets for individual projects.
* Being responsible for the development and delivery of discrete and overall project solutions.
* Leading and managing other staff members in the delivery of design drawings, construction details, specifications and bill of quantities; supporting tender package preparation.
* Ensuring compliance with Health & Safety, Environmental Legislation and in‑house quality assurance standards/processes.
* Actively involved with team resource coordination, supporting the setup of teams and matching the right people to the right roles.
Qualifications & Experience
* Relevant knowledge and experience of highway design and/or drainage systems at various stages of the project life‑cycle. Advantageous experience includes road geometry, roundabouts, at‑grade and grade‑separated junctions, inclusive active travel, highway drainage systems, road restraint systems, traffic signs and road marking design.
* Demonstrable experience leading single or multiple design disciplines in relevant projects (e.g., road, public transport, active travel, public realm, private development).
* Proficiency in design software such as Autodesk Civil 3D, Bentley OpenRoads Designer, InfraWorks, InfoDrainage, PDS.
* Proactive management of change on tasks/projects, with clear communication of potential impacts on programme, cost and quality.
* Knowledge or experience of NEC contracts is beneficial.
* Excellent communication, client/stakeholder management and interpersonal skills.
* Chartered Civil Engineer or an Incorporated Engineer with extensive post‑professional qualification experience, or working towards achieving this.
* In‑depth understanding of the relevant design codes (Design Manual for Roads & Bridges, Manual for Streets, TSRGD, local authority guidance) and the preparation of contract documents and technical approvals.
* Experience in complying with Designers’ Duties under CDM regulations.
