Job Summary

The regional Adult Secure Care service includes a broad range of specialist services across hospital, community and criminal justice contexts including prisons, police and courts. This role carries responsibility for the development, governance and evaluation of services to commissioned contract standards via the budgetary oversight, line management and professional leadership of all psychological services staff. Bed‑based services comprise six medium secure wards (Learning Disability, acute admission, rehabilitation, complex MH/PP, OPD and new habilitation service) and two low secure wards (Learning Disability and MH) with developing transition bungalows. These services are commissioned via the regional Provider Collaborative. The OPD pathway lead role includes the designated CNTW strategic lead role for OPD services. CNTW has eight OPD contracted services across hospital, community and prisons and the role includes support and management of CNTW Clinical Leads (including recruitment and selection), collaborative development and review of strategic/business plans.


Main Duties

* Membership of NSIP (Northumbria Stalking Interventions Programme) multi‑agency steering group.
* Consultant input to monthly Stalking Clinic and supervision/management of CNTW staff in project including oversight of project evaluation.
* Member of MAPPA Strategic Management Board and Serious Incident/Audit reviews.
* Response to CNTW requests for cross‑Trust training developments (e.g. risk to others, fire‑setting risks).
* Quarterly collection and submission of contract information relating to clustering/pathways and delivery of core training package on secure clustering tool.
* Representative member of Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle Safeguarding Commission/Board.
* Representative of PORSCH (Prison and Offender Research in Social Care and Health) Network.
* Respond to opportunities for service development resulting from Government policy changes (e.g. pilot medical/psychological services for convicted sexual offenders).

Person Specification


Education and Qualifications – Essential

* Post‑graduate doctoral level training in clinical or forensic psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996), accredited by the British Psychological Society.
* Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.
* Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the British Psychological Society and as required by the Health and Care Professions Council.
* Significant incremental experience of working as a qualified Psychological practitioner, including significant experience within the designated specialty where the post is located.
* Formal training in supervision of Psychological Professions.


Education and Qualifications – Desirable

* Post‑doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of Psychological practice.
* Experience of professional management of qualified and pre‑qualified psychological professions.
* Experience of management of services within the designated specialty.
* Experience of representing the profession in local policy/development groups.
* Experience of the application of psychology in different cultural contexts.


Knowledge and Experience – Essential

* Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis.
* Knowledge of legislation and its implications for both clinical practice and professional management in relation to the client group.
* Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity across the full range of care settings.
* Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients' psychological care and treatment, both as a professionally qualified care co‑ordinator and also within the context of a multidisciplinary care plan.
* Experience of teaching, training and professional and clinical supervision.
* CPD portfolio and supervision log.
* Demonstrated ability to manage others / aspects of service.
* A high level ability to communicate effectively at both a written and oral level, conveying complex, highly technical and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and a wide range of lay and professional persons within and outside the NHS.


Skills and Competencies – Essential

* Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, formulation, intervention and management.
* Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non‑professional groups.
* Skills in managing emotional impact of dealing with highly emotive and distressing situations through self‑management and use of the supervision process.
* Ability to demonstrate leadership and management skills.


Role / Team Specific – Essential

* Ability to identify, provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to highly distressing situations and severely challenging behaviours.
* Ability to develop and use complex multi‑media materials for presentations in public, professional and academic settings.
* Ability to work effectively within a matrix management system and support organisational change.
* Knowledge and ability to work at a systemic level.
* Substantial experience in strategic leadership, service redesign and delivery.
* Demonstrate skills in co‑production with service users & carers, multidisciplinary colleagues and partners.
